Thx for the info, then it is like that.

Here is the goal proposal

Tbh, #bubblewrap would need to be fixed drastically to be as secure as the #Android #sandbox. And (I am not sure yet) I think even #Snaps are more secure (on #Ubuntu with #Apparmor patches) than #Flatpak with the current system.

As far as I understood, sandboxing needs to happen in #userspace, with tools like #fuse doing the work while being restricted by #MAC like #SELinux or Apparmor.

As I briefly shared on my personal Mastodon account last night (this fediverse thing is going to get confusing, isn’t it), here are a few photos of this year’s garlic. I planted in October 2023.

April 2024

May 2024

June 2024 – Picked the scapes

Bagged and frozen

July 2024 – Picked to dry

September 2024 – Ready to be stored

I’ll likely plant about 200 cloves in October. And the process […]

Okay, so I have the #XFCE side of things set up and working well. I am able to run #clementine and #kpatience at the same time with about 70% memory utilization on 1 gig. Snaps are working great.

#LXDE is installed. For the most part it is set up but for the life of me I cannot get #snaps to integrate/show up on the panel or in the menus. I was able to do it in the last install so this is perplexing.

If you know how to fix this Snaps/LXDE problem holler at yo boy.

Helping someone with Ubuntu 24.04 on a Thinkpad16GB X1 7th generation. Installing aps via Ubuntu App Center. It prefers snaps over debs, but imho it is too soon: all snap based applications feel sluggish & some even refuse to even start properly or crash.

Disappointing experience. Not a great way to welcome a new Linux beginner.

Now replacing snap apps with debs again & considering re-installing this machine with Debian 12.

#Containers ( #flatpak / #snaps ) are a cop out because no one can agree on a libc and a set of #system libraries, forcing #developers to assemble their environment into a container, taking the easy way out for app distribution.

With
#Linux 3+ libc's, 5+ init systems, many sets of libraries, and the userland can be made up of many different #shells and #utilities, the Linux ecosystem is very badly fragmented. It's great for the consumer or business to have many choices, however it increases the level of #software #development complexity due to having to target many different architectures and platforms.

Giving credit to where it's due, this is where the
#BSD and #UNIX distributions shine. I still disagree on the concept of "base" because I like to assemble my system with applications (not libcs or init systems) I want, not what a community of developers says I need. A dated but well noted example is #FreeBSD including #BIND #DNS server on every system install, regardless if the admin wanted it or not.

Wait, there's no built-in UI to install .deb files on Ubuntu? Really??? :neocat_shocked:

I know Canonical really wants to push their stupid walled garden with Snaps, but c'mon. That's just insane. :blobfoxlaughsweat: Snaps are the reason I'll generally not recommend Ubuntu anymore. It's too much to explain to a Linux newbie why Firefox boots slowly and Steam crashes.
