I know I've read masqued balls--but details aren't coming to mind.
So, in The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula LeGuin, there is a scene where Tenar finds and describes a beautiful dress in the Labyrinth. I always wanted to make it.

Absolutely. It's part and parcel of the alternate history thing. Having been a member of the SCA and knowing a bit (just enough to be dangerous) about clothes also helps.

When I go to events, did I ever wear hall costumes or compete in any of the costume events?
I wore a lot of costumes and competed when I was younger. And thinner.
I still dress up [when requested!] to judge cat shows.
