As speaking of "obcessed" - have you asked yourself why the horrible #war in #Gaza is getting so under your skin?

What about the horrible war in #Sudan ? #Tigray (one of the bloodiest recent #genocide) ? #Kongo ? #Myanmar ?

Have you even ever heard of these places? Do you know whats going on there? If not - why is that? Did you ever ask yourself these question?

I guess most don't. And they don't even know why.

Thing is, that the combination of the moral high ground & #outrage is dangerous.

Effective moderation of social media to curb genocidal content

"The 2020-2022 Tigray war is reported to be the deadliest armed conflict of the 21𝑠𝑡 century, with an estimated 600 to 800,000 documented deaths and more than 100 thousand victims of rape as a weapon of war. Social media platforms were instrumental in spreading genocidal content during the conflict, and failure to effectively moderate hateful content resulted in the murder of civilians. This work investigates the expertise and processes required to effectively moderate such genocidal content, and compares these findings to the expertise and processes prioritized by social media platforms."

@DAIR's page has a 10-minute video and a link to the CHI paper, and a statement - which I'll include excerpts from in a reply.

"The war has unleashed innumerable atrocities that have devastated Tigray, becoming the world’s deadliest war, destabilizing Ethiopia, and undermining peace and security in the Horn of Africa. There have been verified reports of widespread civilian massacres, extra-judicial executions, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), man-made famine, looting, destruction of health care facilities, and forced displacement of millions of Tigrayans. The picture emerging since the beginning of the war—albeit incomplete due to a telecommunications blockade affecting large swaths of the region—provides a glimpse into the level of devastation in Tigray."

Omna TigrayWhat's happening in Tigray? On November 4, 2020, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed mobilized the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), the Eritrean Defense Forces (EDF), and the Amhara Special Forces to launch a war against the over 7 million people of the region of Tigray, the northernmost region of the Ethiopian federation.

Thank you for looking at the bigger picture. And it’s not just that. I sit with Black women who have spent their lives trying to free not just themselves but all people. Through education, Black Panther activism, fighting Jim Crow, the right for women to vote, ALL of it.

You don’t want our help. Fine. Don’t cry when he turns your city into #Tigray.

Dice.campSablebadger (@Sablebadger@dice.camp)@ErickaSimone@mastodon.social That is completely fair. Black Women did a huge amount of the lifting during the last bit, in courts, and in election. And white folks, my folks, let them down because they just couldn't bring themselves to do it. Fucking short-sighted idiots to be sure, but we did them dirty regardless.

Meta has so many blood on their hands, that it is unbelievable people are still using their products. And also don't forget companies like Sama, who are also into the #AI scam. Using people from the global south for mentally damaging (and underpaid) social media moderation and AI training! Just 🛑 STOP using #Meta products! Yes that means #Instagram, #Threads and #WhatsApp as well!

A "war", as opposed to a "conflict", reaches at least 1,000 battle-related deaths (both combattants and civilians) within a calendar year. By this account, there have been 9 wars in 2023, 5 of which occurred in Africa (#BurkinaFaso, #Ethiopia, #Nigeria, #Somalia and #Sudan). Sudan has seen the deadliest war in 2023 (5,000). Meanwhile the #Tigray war has reached almost half of all battle-related deaths on the period 2021-2023 (286,000).
