I’ve worked in tech for many years, and one of the events that has been a constant part of the calendar is SXSW. I remember signing up for Twitter back in 2007 just after I heard about it while chatting in Roo Reynolds’ office at IBM, from a visitor who had been at SXSW where it first took off (referenced in a post back over here).

That was nearly 20 years ago now – and in all of that time, I never had the opportunity to go to SXSW for the tech part1 of the festival…

This year, our friends at Flipboard created a side event they called Fediverse House, as a eye-catching label for a series of talks and sessions around the open social web

[yes, it was broader than the Fediverse; some other platforms and topics were represented, too. It was great to be able to talk about the Fediverse]

I was excited to be able to join the event2, and even more so, I was honoured to be asked to join a panel moderated by the wonderful Mia Quagliarello all about building communities on the new social web. I briefly mentioned this trip on the most recent Mastodon blog post update for our updates during March, but I’m now able to include more about the content here.

Here’s the video of our panel discussion, available on Flipboard’s PeerTube – or, on YouTube for those of you that are not yet Fediverse-enabled, or who want to watch on your TV or something 🙂 I hope I did an OK job, representing the good people of the different communities on the Fediverse. I know that my own experience and perspective is not a universal one and I do my best to reflect that when I talk about our spaces.

As well as this panel, the event included some fantastic talks from folks such as Molly White and Cory Doctorow (clips are on PeerTube); it gave me an opportunity to learn more about the ATProto ecosystem from chatting with the nice folks from Bluesky; I was able to meet writers from one of the best publications on the web today, 404 Media; and, it also provided a chance to spend time IRL with friends from the Fediverse – including the excellent Jeff Sikes, and also people I greatly respect and appreciate from WeDistribute, Sean and Damon.

Anyway… I still haven’t actually been to SXSW 😄

This year, I did something better than that. Thank you to the Flipboard team for all your work in putting Fediverse House together!

  1. I was in Austin one year during the music festival, and managed to get to a couple of sessions, but I wasn’t in town specifically for the event, that was a surprise bonus. ↩︎
  2. Thank you to the Social Web Foundation for making my trip to Austin possible. ↩︎

Day 30 cont 🚫🗳️🥔🤓

#PeterDutton (Liberal) has dodged questions about his labelling of some organisations “hate media”.

At a press conference in #MossVale, a reporter referred to Dutton saying twice that some organisations, including the #ABC and #TheGuardian, were “#HateMedia” and that #journalists were #activists, asking what #questions the opposition leader had #disliked.

“I think what Australians are concentrating on only days out from the election is not the feelings of, you know, with respect, anyone [from the media],” the opposition leader replied.

The journalist interrupted: “You’re the one that’s taken issue”.

Dutton continued his answer, saying families were interested in what’s better for them and #promoted his #FuelExcise reduction and #TaxRebate. Another reporter asked: “Isn’t #blaming the #media just a convenient excuse at this point of the campaign?”

Dutton continued #speaking over #questions, saying the prime minister had no interest in stopping gangs. “I want to keep our country safe and that’s exactly what we’ll do,” Dutton said before walking away. Another journalist yelled about #integrity as Dutton walked off.”

The media has picked up the Opposition leader candidate in the last couple of weeks. Also a reminder that yesterday #ABC #4Corners shown last night, investigated Dutton for misconduct of business Interest declarations while he was a Minister in government.

What are your best suggestions for helping someone get rid of "um's" and "uh's" in their public speaking?

Someone asked me to help them... and I remember spending considerable time training myself to not say those things... but that was **20 years ago** when I was getting started with podcasting! 🤯 I have *no idea* what I did all those years ago. 🤦‍♂️

What have you found worked? For yourself or others?

My slide deck tool ( rst2pdf ) produces PDFs, and I use pdfpc to present the PDF slides. It shows the current and next slides, my notes, a timer, and it probably does other things too that I don’t use! I’ve used it for years but it was really designed for “in real world” presenting with one or two screens. Recently I discovered it also supports some great options for remote presentations, but I had to look up how to do that so here are my notes (mostly in case I need to look it up 1 minute before I go on stage again!!). Consonants Need Vowels?

I remember being told that consonants need vowels by one of my elementary school teachers. I remember repeating this to my oldest sister, Lynda, after she had a kid or two.

Lynda said no you don’t need a vowel sound to make a consonant sound. You can just say Boo [as in book] or Foo [as in foot], for the B and F sounds. Notice that I had to use vowels to illustrate my point. But I never caught on to that at the time.

So I remember pre talking with her babies and using what I thought were just consonant sounds to get them to the point where they could almost speak. A couple months later they were speaking.

The short oo sound is the “invisible” vowel in English. It is the u in pull and bull. And the vowel that is between the T and L in cattle and bottle. It may seem invisible at first, but it is definitely there. I don’t blame my sister or me for not realizing it was a vowel, because shows like Electric Company would use this “invisible” vowel to sound out words.

For instance they would say Boo A Doo when sounding out the word Bad. Then they would say the three letter names closer and closer together until magically the oo sound disappeared and they said Bad.

When I realized this, I thought for years that what I was originally told was correct. Consonants need vowels.

That is until I saw mmmm written out one day and I forced myself to think about this. So it became consonants need vowels except m.

Then I thought of a few more. Ssss doesn’t need a vowel. Neither does zzzz. There are also Shhhh and Zhhhh. (If you’re wondering what sound zh is, it’s the g in mirage, the s in leisure. In school I was taught that it was the soft g sound.)

Anyhow, that’s five exceptions to the consonants need vowels rule. Do you have any more?

Go for it! #speaking #conferences

A school banned Indigenous students from using their language.

A century later, it’s teaching Cherokee

A precursor to Duke University once stripped students of their culture. -- Cherokee teachers are leading the change

Between 1882 and 1887, some two dozen children from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians were enrolled in #Trinity #College’s #Industrial #Indian boarding school.

The school, which operated about 20 miles south of #Greensboro, North Carolina, alongside the college’s traditional liberal arts program, received federal funding in pursuit of its goal to #assimilate #Indigenous #students.

The students, who ranged in age from eight to 18, were forced to work and wear #western #clothing, and were #prohibited from #speaking #Cherokee or otherwise maintaining their traditions,
while other students who attended Trinity College were instructed in the liberal arts.

In 1887, the boarding school closed.
Trinity College eventually moved to #Durham and, in 1924, it became #Duke #University.

❇️ Now, the school at which Cherokee and other Indigenous students were forcibly stripped of their culture is being used to help revitalize the Cherokee language.

The classes are important not only because of Duke and the Cherokee people’s shared history,
but also because ♦️more speakers are necessary to prevent the Cherokee language from going #extinct.

In 2019, the three federally recognized Cherokee tribes declared a state of emergency for the language.

“There are approximately 2,000 fluent first-language Cherokee speakers left,
and each Cherokee tribe is
💥losing fluent speakers at faster rates than new Cherokee speakers are developed,” 💥
the declaration reads.

Duke is partnering with #Vanderbilt University in Tennessee and the University of #Virginia for the promotion of 🔸less commonly taught languages, 🔸
such as #Haitian Creole, #Turkish and #Malagasy.
