"The "unique" selling point of the #OMN (Open Media Network) often gets lost because people focus too much on the technical side rather than the simple, fundamental idea at its core. The real value proposition, which might sound like "common sense," is quite radical in today's landscape: in the #OMN, both people and content are treated as data objects in the commons by default and are only private/owned by exception.
This might seem straightforward, but it's a powerful shift away from the dominant models we see today. Most current #dotcons, are built the other way around, where data, content, and even people are enclosed and owned by default, with access and openness as rare exceptions. The #OMN flips this on its head, embodying the #4opens#OpenData, #OpenSource, #OpenProcess, and #OpenStandards, to create a network where sharing and collaboration are the norm, not the exception."

What you talk about here is a truth, but the are issues:

* Yep, a diversity does, but #5W who what where when? Quantify this please.

* The #4opens is a simple retelling of the #FOSS story which has been running much of the code that keeps our society functioning, it's a thing, yes we do add #openprocess so we could talk about that?

* See the #4opens, this is complex and likely needs thought, which we have not done here or in general, maybe time for this?

* How would we hear these voices, where is the "governance" of this space so we can MAKE the assumptions you speak about visible.

*Safety culture is another subject, I talk about this in a few posts somewhere here hamishcampbell.com/?s=safety

* I don't know the guy but as you say #bluesky and #nostr both come from the crypto mess we have suffered from for the last 20 years.

* All the project are #4opens so "consent" is a social thing and works differently than we "common sense" think about these things, we do need to talk about this.

* No idea who the guy is, is he worth looking up?

The #openweb is a framework for human-centric, decentralized technologies built on transparency and collaboration. Its success hinges on trust, and as a slogan suggests, “Technology’s job is to hold the trust in place.” This concept is woven into the #OMN and #OGB initiatives, which emphasize community-driven decision-making and adherence to the #4opens principles.

#OGB and consensus, decisions are valid when a wide group of engaged participants achieves consensus. This safeguards against the normal invisible authoritarian control, single individual find it hard to dominate because the collective create and validate the decisions. Trust groups, not individuals, are the seat of power, ensuring better decision-making and accountability.

The role of #4opens, open process, open data, open licences, and open standards—acts as “gatekeepers” for technological decisions. #Openprocess ensures inclusivity and transparency, blocking decisions that don’t involve public participation. #Opendata guarantees that shared information is accessible, reducing the potential for siloed control. #Openlicenses prevent restrictive ownership that could undermine collaboration. #Openstandards resist fragmentation and force adherence to balance collaborative practices and individual paths. This “soft, swishy” approach avoids rigid authoritarian structures while maintaining #KISS robust, “enforceable” values.

lest look at challenges and strategies for #OMN combatting #mainstreaming “common sense” practices that erode grassroots values. By build strong defaults into projects and hardcode the #4opens principles to keep them central. To make this happen, let’s try and stay polite and inclusive during outreach, avoiding burnout and adding mess through conflict.

Dealing with #fahernistas and trust issues, a significant challenge arises from people and groups who appear trustworthy due to their #mainstreaming tactics but ultimately undermine the values of the #openweb. Coders and contributors need to align with #KISS social change goals, ensuring a grassroots and horizontal approach to development, this is basic.

To do this, we need to work on sustainability efforts by avoid overloading projects with unnecessary features, “How does this fit into the #4opens?”. One path is to establish “friction” as a positive filter for misguided additions, while maintaining a welcoming environment for constructive collaboration.

Building a future beyond the #geekproblem as the #geekproblem originates from early open-source projects that #block the social dimensions of their technologies. By integrating the #4opens and prioritizing trust networks, the #openweb can (re)evolve into a human value network rather than a technological dead-end.

The #deathcult feeding off the decay of the #openweb perpetuates centralized and exploitative systems. All our activism is about, focusing on planting seeds for a grassroots rebirth, #nothingnew is a starting point, returning to focus on modernist principles—clear goals, collective action, and systemic solutions—provides a foundation to grow #somethingnew.

The #openweb vs. #closedweb debate is not new, but it remains a critical narrative. By holding technology accountable to trust and community values, we create tools that empower rather than exploit. The #OMN and #OGB projects embody this path.

For those interested in coding for change, visit the OMN wiki and join the effort to make this vision a reality, please.

I use the #4opens to do this as it's simply #foss development with #openprocess added on, a useful tool to get past what people say their projects are about. And what they are actually about unite.openworlds.info/Open-Med we need tools like this to compost the piles of #techshit people keep creating, if we are to have soil to grow tech seeds of hope, like #Activertypub

The #NGO path is a mess, but maybe a needed mess.

How to get dancing elephants and paper planes into a “foundation” model

* Do something different - dancing elephants and paper planes.

* Do something normal - control freekery and power politics games.

* Do nothing - maybe it all just carries on or more likely decay and irrelevances.

#Activertypub is the first option, and this is why we love it and are having this conversation.

Some links on this socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/

Ps. can you post some links to the #openprocess that resulted in this thanks, am interested in documenting how these things happen.

SocialHub · What would a fediverse "governance" body look like?Good questions. This post is in reaction to people talking about the same project but as a traditional opensource “foundation”. Am thinking people are seeing the #dotcons sniffing about the #openweb and what we can do to defend ourselves - like setup the higharacy before they come in and set it up “for” us. Thus, the #bluesky tag - its trying to think outside this traditional path, so we think BEFORE we inevitably go down it this kinda crap path.

This might seem straightforward, but it's a powerful shift away from the dominant models we see today. Most current #dotcons, are built the other way around, where data, content, and even people are enclosed and owned by default, with access and openness as rare exceptions. The #OMN flips this on its head, embodying the #4opens#OpenData, #OpenSource, #OpenProcess, and #OpenStandards, to create a network where sharing and collaboration are the norm, not the exception.
By adhering to #KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) principle, the #OMN provides a foundation for building genuinely open and participatory digital spaces. So, there it is, stripped down to its essence: the #OMN isn't just another tech project; it’s a framework for reclaiming our digital commons.

The #4opens framework provides a set of principles for testing, evaluating and promoting progressive social and tech projects. By adhering to these principles, people and communities support initiatives that prioritize openness, collaboration, and social good. Let's explore how each of the #4opens can be utilized.

Open Data: Open data is the foundation of transparency and accountability in tech projects. By making data freely accessible and usable by anyone, projects can foster innovation, collaboration, and democratic decision-making. Progressive social and tech initiatives can leverage #opendata to empower communities, address social inequalities, and advance public interest goals. For example, open data can be used to track government spending, monitor environmental pollution, or analyze social trends.
Open Source: Open source software is essential for fostering a healthy and vibrant tech ecosystem. By providing access to source code and encouraging collaborative development, #opensource projects can accelerate innovation, improve software quality, and promote digital autonomy. Progressive social and tech initiatives can utilize open source software to build tools and platforms that empower people and challenge corporate monopolies.
Open "Industrial" Standards: Open industrial standards are critical for ensuring interoperability and compatibility across diverse tech systems. By adhering to #openstandards, projects can avoid vendor lock-in, promote diversity, and facilitate innovation. Progressive social and tech initiatives can advocate for and adopt open standards to build decentralized, resilient, and inclusive tech infrastructures. For example, #openstandards for communication protocols can enable peer-to-peer networks and decentralized social media platforms.
Open Process: Open process refers to the transparent and participatory decision-making processes that govern tech projects. By involving stakeholders in project planning, development, and governance, open process fosters trust, accountability, and collective ownership. Progressive social and tech initiatives can embrace #openprocess by adopting democratic and inclusive decision-making structures, such as consensus-based decision-making or participatory budgeting. For example, open process can enable community-led initiatives, address social justice issues, and promote collective well-being.

In summary, the #4opens framework provides a roadmap for advancing progressive social and tech change and challenging the dominance of centralized, proprietary tech platforms. By prioritizing openness, collaboration, and social impact, individuals and communities can support initiatives that empower people to build a more equitable and democratic tech ecosystem.

A reply, not going to link to the original as this would be seen as trolling, and would not be kind anyway:

This is NOT what is happening, have you seen the hashtag #4opens there are two, #openprocess and #opendata in this all actions should happen in public (unless there is a good recsion not to - and this is the disagreement of this thried).

And #opendata all data should have a searchable history that can be used in a collective permissionless way, this does not work behind a login, so avoid posting as much as possible where users have to have an account, security level and login.

Am pointing out I understand you see this differently it’s a part of the spiky fluffy debate, the idea is to keep this open not try and close it. Please stop trying to do this, thanks.

This post here is a fail from #4opens so to fix this I transfer it (after basic anonymizing) back to the openweb where It’s supposed to be posted.

The boring part is having to keep asking to stop this behaver Legitimacy (political) - Wikipedia is a good question at this point. Please, what is the plan on this, this is a mod question I would like an answer to (5th time asked)

Maybe we can try to bring this #openweb tech funding mess to ngiforum2023.eu/, but we face a normal #mainstreaming top down #4opoens fail, so likely will not find an easy space to do this.

NGI Zero open source funding talks about the @sovtechfund

NGI Zero open source funding
The @sovtechfund is offering grants to people who contribute to a sustainable open source ecosystem. Grants go up to €300,000 per application and cover three main topics:

1. Improve FOSS Developer Tooling
2. Securing FOSS Software Production
3. FOSS Infrastructure Documentation

With this program, the Sovereign Tech Fund seeks to stimulate an open digital infrastructure: fundamental technologies that enable the creation of other software.

UPDATE Looks like people are also arguing this point shared-digital.eu/statement/

We are pouring public funding down the drain agen, these criteria are feeding the #geekproblem not actually trying to take the “problem” out of our geek paths. The people who PUSH this agenda are the problem – please POINT at them and talk about this mess, thanks.

Can we get a link to the people making the agenda, thanks, will try polite conversation #4opens

I worked with the guy who used to be behind the #NGIzero account, we did good stuff with the #EU outreach.

The replacement, I have no idea who they are and getting #blocking

This is a #4opens fail.

In all these toots am talking past “people” to talk about things/social/groups and not directly to individuals, they are second in all these conversations. This is the place where social value lives. The problem is, we don’t have hardly any of this… which is the subject am talking about.

#blocking is not seeing this, addressing this, the is a lot of blocking going on 😉

Am happy to talk to “individuals” as a first step.

Pouring money down the drain, because the majority of the problems in the #Fediverse and the #openweb are social not technical – if they only fund technical parts of this culture they are feeding the “problem” and this problem is going to pour the resources down the drain.

I understand this is a hard conversation to have, we have to try.

First step is #4opens, WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE PUSHING MESS while doing “good”, step into the light please #openprocess

Ignoring this basic #openprocess is #blocking, this is why conversations are done in public #4opens

yes, I understand the fear this creates and the desire to #block, but this then makes the #4opens fail more visible if people wont to use this for the needed change and challenge if they don’t yes it’s more noise what are you signal or noise 🙂

Signal vs Nose.

I find #mainstreaming people to be actually mad and increasingly bad. When do we get more #4opens people pushing change challenge in these #openweb spaces, please?

Am increasingly seeing this #blocking as a culture of fear, or more real as a culture of fear pushed as power politics.

Am thinking meany people will be confused and likely mix signal with noise on this subject.

Who are the bad people, the powerless pushing the #4opens on the #openweb or the powerful Eurocrats worshipping the #deathcult while protecting these thin careers in the #mainstreaming

If you find yourself agenst the first and defending the second, then you are the problem.

This makes your behaver noise, and what you do very likely to be more #techshit to compost.

I wonder if people understand what activism is on the #openweb any more?

You talk to people to emplane why they are doing WRONG, and at the same time you push them as HARD as you can to change their wrong behaver.

This works best with the #fluffy #spiky debate as a core part of this process.

People who keep saying “why can’t we all get along”, and “wouldent it go better if we were nice to each other” and the PROBLEM blocking the activism from having the needed affect…

The project has been running for over ten years and operates with an #openprocess. Users can become mods after being involved for a period of time. The modding process is based on a clear project statement and encourages a respectful and inclusive community.

The #OMN is related to the #visionontv project, a grassroots media project that creates and distributes independent video content. The two projects share values and goals in promoting alternative media and challenging mainstream narratives.
