Fascinating paper in Zootaxa yesterday describing a new genus in the #Gelechiidae (#Lepidoptera) from #Sabah, East #Malaysia.

The male #moths have very unusual wing-like projections and hair-pencils (presumably to disperse pheromones) on the mesoscutum.

Plate with nine images of specimens of the new moth genus Esexalata. These include two images of pinned moths, several closeups of antennae and three specifically for the unique character shown by males of these moths. The moths themselves are small and narrow winged, the forewings being dark brown with orange patches. The head is smoothly-scaled and creamish with long hooked palpi (mouthparts). The top left image of a pinned moth nicely shows the wing-like projections and hair-pencils. These are a little longer than the moth's head and cross the back like two extra short translucent wings. In close up they are wedge-shaped with rounded ends and translucent with lengthwise ribs.

Four more common/representative seasonal #moths from the last two nights here in #Canberra, #Australia

The wonderfully triangular moth is an emerald moth, #Geometrinae: Austroterpna paratorna

The very bright yellow/orange moth photographed side-on is #Gelechiidae:
Ardozyga thermochroa

The small yellow and chestnut arrow-shaped moth is #Lecithoceridae: Crocanthes prasinopis

And the moth with legs splayed out sideways is the very common #Stathmopodidae: Stathmopoda melanochra

A large purplish brown moth on a wall. It is facing towards the upper left and has very broad forewings forming something close to a rounded equilateral triangle.

A small moth with its head touching the surface between its forelegs. The head and front half of the wings are pale yellow, with the outer parts of the wings mostly chestnut. The head forms the tip of an arrow-head shape.
