HERE WE GO
The May 2024 #fridaygeotrivia question.
What is the longest chain of countries such that each successive country in the chain shares a land border and capital city names are in alphabetical order?
Example: SK (Bratislava) - CZ
(Prague) - PL
(Warsaw) is a chain of 3. Who can top that?
As always, you need the #fridaygeotrivia hashtag and the country flag emoji.
1/n
2/ One other twist to the game: in the case of dependent territories with their own ISO code you can use either the capital of the country or the capital of the dependent territory. So, for example, you can consider the capital of French Guiana (ISO code: GF) to be Cayenne or Paris.
Full rules, etc on the blog: https://blog.opencagedata.com/post/geotrivia-may-2024
Good luck! #fridaygeotrivia
3/ to clarify - capital names in ENGLISH, not the local language(s).
Also, in the case of countries with multiple capitals you can choose whichever you like
4/ @IIVQ opens the #fridaygeotrivia scoring with a chain of 6
Amsterdam>
Berlin>
Brussels>
Paris->
Rome->
Vienna
@opencage Combining the dependent territories and (ab)use different capitals rule: Marigot->
(
) Philippsburg -> Jumping to
Amsterdam>
Berlin>
Brussels>
Paris->
(
) Cayenne (different capital of dependent country)->
Paramaribo->
Sao Paulo which has as other capital Brasilia ->
Buenos Aires->
La Paz->
Lima->
Quito
#fridaygeotrivia
@opencage
Abusing #fridaygeotrivia rules further with:(
)Basse-Terre->
(
)Fort-de-France->
(
)Mamoudzou ->
(
)Marigot->
(
)Philippsburg->
(
)Oranjestad->
(
)Willemstad -> Jumping to capital of constituent country
Amsterdam->
Berlin>
Brussels>
Paris->
(
)Cayenne (different capital of dependent country)->
Paramaribo->
Sao Paulo which has as other capital Brasilia ->
Buenos Aires->
La Paz->
Lima->
Quito
(Without going into any French-Dutch infinite loop)
@IIVQ this is very nice effort but Sao Paulo is not a capital of Brazil
@opencage AAARGH. Then it breaks down to these 13: (
)Basse-Terre->
(
)Fort-de-France->
(
)Mamoudzou ->
(
)Marigot->
(
)Philippsburg->
(
)Oranjestad->
(
)Willemstad -> Jumping to capital of constituent country
Amsterdam->
Berlin>
Brussels>
Paris->
(
)Cayenne (different capital of dependent country)->
Paramaribo
#fridaygeotrivia
@IIVQ checking ....
@IIVQ I like the creativity of this, but doesn't quite feel right to do the jump from one dependent territory to another if they don't border each other.
Sorry, but we're not going to count it.
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia.
Fair enough!
Thanks for the nice play though and a well-deserved win to @ccferrie with 11 "proper" countries (https://mapstodon.space/@ccferrie@mastodon.ie/112536542843453852)
Question: are there any dependent countries that land-border their mothership (or each other) so you can jump from one to another? I can't think of any other than England,Wales and Scotland.
@opencage
#fridaygeotrivia Then I guess you would've also not allowed Amsterdam->
Berlin>
Brussels>
(
)Fort-de-France (as a capital of a subdivision of France, not jumping seas, only abusing the dependent country for it's capital)->
Madrid->
Rabat
I guess ;-) ?
Enjoy the weekend!
@IIVQ feels a bit twisted.
Neither Belgium , nor Spain
border Martinique
@opencage I was puzzling how to apply this rule but now I see I could do Brasilia->Use Paris as capital for Guyana->Paramaribo (except that's not in alphabetical order, but imagine it is)
@IIVQ see @cyclotopie 's answer
Bogota Brasilia
Caracas
Georgetown
Paramaribo
Paris
Rome
San Marino
@opencage @cyclotopie Aaah, thx!
