This week in #geoweirdness we take a slightly different tack.
We're pleased to present one of those sites that makes the internet absolutely delightful: the Vaguely Rude Places Map
https://www.vaguelyrudeplacesmap.com/
1/n
2/ The Vaguely Rude Places Map is a crowdsourced list of place names that are, well, rude.
3/ Whether anatomical, scatalogical, or outright obscene, the VRPM gathers them all!
Browse the map to find a rude placename near you. Hours of geofun are assured.
Here are some examples in
4/ Funny placenames are no joke!
"Facebook removes page for French town named Bitche"
https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/bitche-facebook-france-scli-intl/index.html
5/ In 2021 the village of Fucking, Austria decided to change their name to Fugging because signs kept getting stolen.
6/ What sort of mad geospatial genius has the vision for VRP?
None other than Gary Gale, and he can now be found here on Mastodon: @vicchi
Here's a pic of Gary (on left, in stylish Yahoo FireEagle T-shirt) when he won the SplashMaps best speaker prize at the Sept 2018 Geomob London #geomobLON
He also helped us launch OpenCage back in 2014. Here's a pic w OpenCage founders @freyfogle and @mtmail at the Prime Meridian in Greenwich, UK for the very first brainstorming session.
7/ Full credit to Gary, but of course no single person, no matter how motivated, will be able to gather all the rude places, so you'll be pleased to know anyone can contribute to the list or to the project itself, it's all open source:
8/ At OpenCage we are delighted to provide the hosting for the Vaguely Rude Places map.
This is just one of the ways we try to support geo-innovation. You can find out about our other efforts on our about page:
9/ Thanks for reading (and sharing), and have fun browsing the Vaguely Rude Places map.

We have many more threads about specific countries, border disputes, geocoding, etc on our blog. Some still on twitter, but over time we are moving them all here to mastodon. Enjoy.
@opencage I have to contribute a few, first and foremost the "anal triangle" of Belgium: Kontich, Aartselaar and Reet (funny only in Dutch).
The Dutch town of Goor (dirty) should be added as well.
@opencage #geoweirdness
I have a multiple candidate for inclusion in the Vaguely Rude Places map. Just outside Stonehouse in Lanarkshire is a small area that delights in Sodom Hill, Double Dykes and Shafts. A bit of something for everyone!
@geomannie great, but please submit them via the site, not here
@opencage The signs of the French town of Condom (Departement du Gers) keep getting stolen as well. So far, they haven't decided to change the town name.
@opencage I just checked some locations near me and I might need some help from a native English speaker to understand why would "Tossa de Mar" or "Llabià" be vaguely rude. "Tossa" - "Toss" Maybe? I'm clueless about the other one though
@pparescasellas Consider it a great chance to learn the fine points of the language!
It is very close to an anatomical term. Try wikipedia
@opencage Aaah, of course!
@opencage
There are two different places in Sweden called Pukeberg.
Though Google partly misspells one of them (no, it's not "Puka-").
