Oh, I thought the 500 char limit in #Mastodon was configurable. Now I wonder what software are running on the instances of people who post long toots. For the moment, I found this sight fork:
@mdione it is configurable with 1 or 2 small file edits and then recompiling.
@BeAware that's more "recompilable" than "reconfigurable" :) But yeah, I guessed that much.
@mdione well, I just never found it difficult to recompile and to me, it's so easy that it seems comparable.
Maybe just me though.
@BeAware If I want to automate installing and configurin Mastodon on a serer, I would rather not have to install a compiler there.
@mdione ahhh. I didn't think of that.
GlitchSoc has it as an env variable.
It is configurable. Most posts are under 500 characters anyway, so not usually a big issue.
It is 11K here. I doubt I have ever went over 1k. Some times over 500, but that is rare.
@SpaceLifeForm I have been wishing for 600 for a while. Just not sure to migrate just for that.
Pretty much what others do, is just to create a thread by replying to the first post. It is helpful if you know that it will be longer than 500, and to note that you are creating a thread in the first post. Even better, is if you can logically break it up into paragraphs that do not split across consecutive posts. Helps readability.
@SpaceLifeForm yes, I do, but sometimes it gives me the impression that this 'tidbit' format actually breaks our ability to read longer texts. And given that the way how info spreads is the boost but of only one toot (unless you boost the whole thread), sometimes readers of those boosts just get one part and not the whole idea.
Not to mention that I would rather also have e-mail like responses. I guess I just miss mailing lists... :^)
