Last night's adventures in junior gardening included teaching young scouts about how our homes are like hotels between natural areas, how beans and peas create fertilizer plus food, and that violets make great jelly and have exploding seed pods.

They planted pansies, violets, snap peas, and black beans to take home in recycled containers. Yay, Plants!

The organisation my wife volunteers for has finally moved all its volunteer training online.

It's very clever, very cheap & extremely unfreindly.
The login initially assumes you are on the organisation's payroll and located within its premises and on their intranet - once I'd worked out how to get around that, it appears that it's impossible to stay logged in to do several courses at one sitting - you need to log in each time.

I'm not sure that the training itself has been run past any disability checks - Sacha has a degree of dyspraxia and she has really struggled with the training websites.
The manager is dismissive - the attitude comes across (meant or otherwise) as 'you're only a volunteer, so what?'

She's seriously thinking of giving up on the volunteering that she really loves and - I believe- does make a difference to a number of young lives. It's very niche - there's no alternative for her to move to.

I've been looking at getting back into volunteering recently, but have struggled to find charity trustee roles (this fits my interests and experience - I'm less keen on front-line work).

I wonder if this is because charities tend to recruit their trustees from people they know already (e.g. friends / colleagues of existing trustees), rather than advertising? I don't think it's that there are no vacancies as it was always the hardest role to recruit for when I was a trustee.

Conservative Party of Canada paying people to canvas voters in Courtenay-Alberni!?

Crazy.

The only paid staff I have ever heard of in other parties are sometimes the Chief of Staff/Campaign Manager and/or the Financial Manager.

I have NEVER heard of canvassers getting paid.

(Screenshotted just in case)

If you've ever wanted to help a political party in the hope that it might prevent the country from sliding into fascism, now is the time, btw.

You are allowed to only help how you want.

You may help more than one party (I usually volunteer with both the Greens and the Socialists).

They need tasks done that you can do from home, or at night, or with limited capacity, it's not all daytime walking/standing.

And it really does make a difference.

Edited to add: you don't join a party to volunteer. You don't swear endless allegiance. It's chill.

The slides for my talk today at #transform_D on how #Wikimedia projects can and do interact with other #volunteering communities
sit at doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15104365 .

In German for now but if you'd be interested in an English version, please let me know. I am considering to submit a similar talk to Wikimania.
