New blog post!
In which I talk in detail how I deployed Nextcloud locally in my homelab using LXD and NextcloudPi.
I go through the whole process of setting up LXD, importing the NCP image, installing, configuring, and scheduling backups for my own personal cloud.

This VM is running with a NATted NIC, and legacy DOS TCP/IP LANMAN drivers do not display the DHCP info - So I can't see what IP address the VM is getting, and Trumpet Winsock needs that information. Handily, there is a DHCP.PRM binary file that gets created with the info in it, but there's no actual user tool as part of LANMAN to read it. So... Using only what I have on this VM, I write my own parser!
I had totally forgotten that VirtualBox doesn't come with guest DOS network drivers. So off we go to try and find some that work... (see my previous post about Internet Bit Rot).
Blog Post Forthcoming for GPUs
ok, it's morning nap time starting 5min ago... but I'm decently pleased that this morning I've wrangled the (yes, linux) kernel into behaving more decently (a little like FreeBSD's sanity) when allocating similarly ID'd PCIe devices to VMs for GPU passthrough.
Short version:
- many GPUs of same PCI ID type in host
- want certain VMs to get certain GPUs
- want main host to get one GPU for compute (server, no display)
FreeBSD:
- the above requires two loader.conf lines and one rc.conf line
Linux:
- oh lordy, how many modprobe and modules-load.d files, and grub entries, and kmod blacklists, rebuild initramfs, and rebuild grub menu, and don't forget to purge the entire nouveau driver from the kernel so it doens't try to backstab nvidia and steal your first born...
How to scare away your customers, exhibit 4821: #Broadcom #VMware:
"VMware distributor Arrow says minimum software subs set to jump from 16 to 72 cores.
Claims Broadcom will levy 20 percent #penalty for customers who don’t pay before renewal deadlines"

I don't know you, but if I were a customer for that product, I'd most probably start migration projects today.
#ProxLB - an opensource & advanced VM loadbalancer for #Proxmox clusters. Including affinity & anti-affinity rules, maintenance mode (evacuating nodes) and more. I just published my slides about it.

What could possibly go wrong with #Windows VMs in #Proxmox when using native CPU type? Why could this have impacts to the VMs' performance? Let's do #virtualization the right way.

No April Fools' joke - the new #ProxLB release is scheduled for the 1st of April! Stay tuned!
ProxLB is an advanced #loadbalancer for #Proxmox clusters that brings in features like #DRS (known from #VMware), #maintenance mode and (anti-)#affinity groups.
What do you miss in #Proxmox or #XCPng?
My customers often told me, that when migrating from #VMware based setups, they would miss something like #DRS. As a result I published #ProxLB as a load balancer. Now, I do the same for #DPM and also some other things. What do you miss or what stops you or your business from switching to Proxmox or XCPng?
Finally after along while #Ganeti has seen a new (pre) release: Ganeti 3.1.0-rc2 out now!
Go check it out while it's hot :-)
#Proxmox virtualization often goes along with the great Proxmox Backup Server - and we always want statistics! Let's get our metrics of PBS in Grafana!
In this HowTo, we will quickly install and configure the pbs-exporter for hashtag#Prometheus on a Proxmox Backup Server system, add a token for the user and install the hashtag#Grafana dashboard. - #devops #homelab #netops #virtualization #backup #pbs #proxmoxbackupserver

ProxLB 1.0.7 (an opensource DRS alike solution for #Proxmox clusters) is just around the corner!
1.0.7 will be the last version before I'm going to publish the new refactored code base in a modern and object oriented way. Version 1.1.0 squashes some more bugs that were postponed on the current code base and makes the overall future handling much easier (including new features).
