folks, I do not at all regret to report that the speedrunners are at it again. a good, reasonably technical but not inaccessible recap of the latest Mario-related nonsense youtube.com/watch?v=WdadpHLAfdA

(note, because this is confusing for people not deep in the fandom: Super Mario Bros Lost Levels is a separate game cartridge that uses the same graphics and engine as Super Mario Bros 1. It was sold in Japan as SMB2, while the west got a Mario-themed reskin of a completely different, less nightmarishly difficult platformer as SMB2. It was then released in the west a few years later as part of a master collection under the name Lost Levels.)

The runs are in the validation queue right now so it's not officially accepted but today I did a new sub-10min Personal Best in Solo and Coop 2P Any% on Sworn and it feels really cool.

Still lots of room for improvement (WR is ~7min) but the progress is really feeling great.

“Twitch cited the "costly" indefinite #storage of these #highlights, which it says are responsible for "less than 0.1% of hours watched" across the site. These highlights "haven't been very effective in driving discovery or #engagement with viewers," #Twitch wrote […].”

“The #speedrunning community seems particularly likely to be negatively affected by Twitch's move.”

(Article in Polish) In March 2009, Maciej “groobo” Maselewski, via the Speed Demos Archive, (claimed to) have beaten the original Diablo in 3 minutes and 12 seconds. After analysis, it turns out that there are 2.2 billion possible variants of maps in the game, a tool was created to analyze them, and it proved this record fake (it's still listed in the Guinness Book for fastest rpg completion).
