As an addendum, preserving historical texts as digital scans also makes it harder to argue that they are faked - which is maybe less important for German folk tale collections, but likely a concern for Lincoln speeches that go against "conventional wisdom". It won't stop the hardcore fanatics from denial of course, but it might help convince people who haven't yet made up their minds.

Ideally, we need both - the digital scans for #scholarship and the machine-readable versions for #accessibility .
