neogoing to write a proper introduction post! hello, my name is neo. i'm a transmasc in my 20's. generally speaking i like machines that move people, amusement rides, shooter games, and various sci fi and sci fi-adjacent media. i'm in between jobs right now, but my background spans aerospace engineering, acting, teaching, and operating amusement rides. i occasionally draw and shoot 35mm film! (even less often, i write mediocre fanfiction.) i'm on the fence about talking about my mental issues on new social media pages but you might find me mentioning them down the line. i'll put my interests in the tags. You could always tell if they were hitting their dispatch interval or not because there would be a backward launch on a long screech in the station music. Juliet Merida, Dum Tran Elf 🏳️‍⚧️The coaster wheel project is complete (for now)! The wheel is out of the vinegar and got another good scrub with soap and water before getting dried and oiled a little bit. Any rust that's visible is flash rust- which formed after treatment while it was still a little wet with water. Pretty hard to avoid any rust. I'm super, duper, incredibly happy with how it turned out. Even the rust on the grease port has been cleared. Most of the iron oxide (the black dust) was removed in the vinegar soak and with a soapy scrub. The very last thing I plan to do is to give it a little bit of a polish. But here it is, all cleaned up! I do wish the smooth coating was more intact but this is the wheel I have to work with unless someone at Holiday World reads this and wants to send me a new one! ;) If I ever get around to trying to polish this thing up I will definitely share pics of it. Until then, that's it for this restoration. It was a lot of fun and I'm super happy with it. Juliet Merida, Dum Tran Elf 🏳️‍⚧️Here's the wheel this morning after an overnight in the tank. It got a scrub with the kitchen brush, dried up, and oiled a little. It's still going to go back in the tank later, but damn, I'm happy with the progress. You can see some of the smooth coating (teflon?) on the road surface of the wheel is still intact. This is why I didn't want to sandblast or brush it. Mäh W.I only had my smartphone camera with me today. But it seems that 2D barcodes are used for rollercoaster train positioning systems nowadays. Wtf? I've only seen this being specified for systems at speeds up to 10 m/s which is likely exceeded here. I think it goes fully around. Juliet Merida, Dum Tran Elf 🏳️‍⚧️Cedar Point's Top Thrill 2 won't reopen this year after running for only a few days after its debut this spring. The armchair engineers at Coasterbuzz (who usually end up being right) suspect it's in part because of a different center of mass on the new Zamperla trains. Comparing videos from the old Intamin trains on the original ride to videos of the new version there seems to be more "roll" on the trains, which suggests that at very least the seats are higher from the track. Observations of sensors placed on one of the trains being used in test runs seem to indicate they're testing stress on the chassis of the trains, possibly meaning there were cracks either forming or potentially forming. Best of luck to Cedar Point and Zamperla while they try to make this cursed penis-shaped thrill ride work. MDMRNOh, since I went to Hersheypark with the kids yesterday - let me rate what rides I hit with them: SuperDooperLooper - Fun, roller coaster. Simple, single loop, great for newer roller coaster riders. 6/10Skyrush - Fast, fun, picks up speed quick. 8/10Reese's Cupfusion - Literal on-rails shooter. Indoor ride in a cart with lightguns in hand shooting at candies trying to raid the Peanut Butter Cup factory. Fun, worth playing once, not worth the line to do again, tho. 6/10Fahrenheit - The initial ride up triggered my anxiety as it's borderline 90°, but the ride itself after that was fantastic. 5/10 cause anxiety issues.Wildcat's Revenge - Fun roller hybrid coater filled with corkscrews. Most picket fencing we encounter is two dimensional because it's in cars that don't have elevation changes at any sort of rate that would impact our signal. But taking a ride on MF would absolutely introduce elevation change as well. The first overbanked turn is over 150 feet tall and the second hill, which is at a right angle to the first drop, is about 200 feet. What would that do to our signal as we rapidly move in three dimensions both toward and away from the receiving station? I imagine we'd see some frequency shift (which is really what picket fencing is, right? Because Doppler effect?) And how would the picket fencing differ between FM and SSB transmissions?
