Latest ENSO (El Niño/Southern Oscillation) forecast is out. The verdict is that the minor La Niña that existed the past few months is now gone. We are in “Neutral" conditions for the forseeable future, likely all the way to Fall and maybe next Winter.

Better chance of another La Niña next summer than El Niño, but the best chance is for Neutral conditions.

The focal plane of my lens is not ideal for this kind of photo, but gave it a try anyways, a microworld of diverse mosses and fungi growing on a massive log. I completely missed this fallen branch with orange witch's butter ([Dacrymyces chrysospermus](https://w.wiki/BmRV)) the first time I ran by; fortunately, I took a wrong turn and had to double-back. The bright orange specks of witch's butter caught my eye on the second pass, and I was glad for the excuse to recover while I snapped some photos

PeaceHealth union members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike at St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham, WA.

The Service Employees International Union represents more than 900 PeaceHealth employees, including technicians, lab professionals and service workers. The two sides remain far apart on several key issues, including wages and medical leave.

The Stzʼuminus are well-known for their war canoes. The vessels can range from 19 to 52 feet long. They are made of cedar and hand carved.

The rain really brings out the details in one of my favorite rhododendrons. This Rhododendron sino grande, a species found in Southwest China and fairly rare in cultivation. The big flower bracts are nice. But really one grows them for the huge leaves-- these are about 30 cm long but they can reach almost a meter in mature specimens. The plant itself reaches 10 meters in the wild but half that in cultivation. And it grows really slowly.

The charming Northwest Railway Museum (NRM) built in 1890 is nestled under the blooming branches of a cherry blossom tree, with soft pink flowers contrasting against the rustic, vintage architecture in Snoqualmie, Washington.
It is the oldest continuously operating train station in the state of Washington and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
Today tourists can take the train from the Depot to the top of Snoqualmie Falls, then to North Bend and back. A new period-appropriate (and very ornate) cedar shingle roof was completed in 2024.
