Contact print from paper negative
5x7 Burke & James large format wooden view camera

I'm unsure at this point where I took this. I'd originally thought it came from my road trip between Portland and San Francisco in 2017, but I didn't have my 5x7 at that point. So 2018 is a guess, and the location a mystery.

Printed on warm tone paper from a paper negative that was a bit overexposed (hard to do, as it takes a long time to get a good exposure on darkroom paper).

Orange filter

I remember standing on the concrete pier with my head under the focusing cloth, watching the people walk past. There was a slight breeze and the sky was blue. Shot for a photography class I was taking at City College. Turned out well.

Pine Cone (2018)

This was shot on paper negative (pretty sure) in my 5x7 wooden view camera, a Burke and James from Chicago.

I'd begun experimenting with printing out larger versions of shots onto transparency (scanning them first if need be), contact printing the transparency and then doing a second round of contact printing to achieve a positive which was larger than the original. Still with me? A lot of steps, but it proved to be really effective.

I *think* this image is the result of that process. I know I did it with this pine cone, as I came across an image of the oriignal next to the 'new and improved' one earlier today.

One benefit of the process is that before you print it to transparency, you can spend some time increasing contrast, fixing spots, stray dust particles, etc, so that you make the finished image the best it can be.

You can also use the same process for converting an original digital image into a paper negative, etc., which opens up a whole other set of possibilities.

Onion, Kitchen Counter (2018)

From a paper negative shot in my wooden 5x7 Burke and James view camera. Unsure how long the exposure was, at this point. Several minutes at least. I did a lot of hour-long exposures back then; this may have been one of them.

I've always loved the detail on the onion skin.

I was taking a view camera class at the local community college, and this pic seemed to wow the professor at the end of the semester. After that, she gave me a lot of free darkroom paper and developer chems to keep me going. Nice lady.

Mount Shasta, California (2017)

Paper negative from Graflex Speed Graphic 4x5 large format camera. I think this was a one-minute exposure. I took several paper negs during this trip, and processed them when I got back home.

This was taken during the first leg of a three-day road trip from San Francisco to Portland, Oregon.

Swipe for a cell phone pic of the setup.

Building At Somoa Dunes, Eureka, California (2017)

Paper negative contact print
Taken with a Graflex Speed Graphic during a road trip between San Francisco and Portland. Approximately a one-minute exposure.

Having never been to Eureka before and wanting to explore, I went on a drive and just happened to drive down a road which led me past this lonely building. So glad that I saw it, as this is one of my favorite paper negative prints.
