boredsquirrel<p>What permanent image hosts do you use for <a href="https://tux.social/tags/OpenStreetMap" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenStreetMap</span></a> images?</p><p>It is really cumbersome that there is no usable and integrated review system (I never understood <a href="https://tux.social/tags/OpenPlaceReviews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenPlaceReviews</span></a>) and no images? That's a reaaal quality issue</p>
Preston Maness ☭<p>I'm sad to hear that <a href="https://octodon.social/tags/OpenPlaceReviews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenPlaceReviews</span></a> is shutting down.</p><p><a href="https://openplacereviews.org/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">openplacereviews.org/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>I never liked that it was a blockchain where a blockchain wasn't needed, but nevertheless, I *did* use it for uploading photos associated with POIs on <a href="https://octodon.social/tags/OpenStreetMap" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenStreetMap</span></a> <a href="https://octodon.social/tags/osm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>osm</span></a>, and seeing them within the <a href="https://octodon.social/tags/OsmAnd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OsmAnd</span></a> app.</p><p>The alternative now is, astoundingly, this convoluted mess:</p><p>1. Make account on commons.wikimedia.org.<br>2. Create "Category:Relevant Name Here" category page on commons.wikimedia.org as a container for your pictures (and perhaps other data) of the POI.<br>3. Upload relevant photos (and other data) to commons.wikimedia.org, associating them with "Category:Relevant Name Here". (this is really multiple steps with annoyingly redundant caption and description fields, too; at least the geo data in the pictures is automatically parsed).<br>4. Maybe also add a link to wikidata stuff, depending on the POI.<br>5. Update the POI on openstreetmap.org to set the `wikimedia_commons` `key`'s `value` to `Category:Relevant Name Here` (NOT the URL, or any more friendly key id, for some painful reason)<br>6. Hope that the relevant client that's pulling OSM data sees that key and also tries to pull associated pictures from it.<br>7. Hey, at least the main openstreetmap.org website showcases that key and lets you click on it as a URL to pull up the commons.wikimedia.org page with its media.</p><p>Ouch. I mean, sure, it "works," but... what a pain in the ass.</p><p>The end result is... Fuego Burger, in Benbrook, TX:</p><p><a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/10998537571" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">openstreetmap.org/node/1099853</span><span class="invisible">7571</span></a></p><p><a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Fuego_Burger?uselang=en" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Cat</span><span class="invisible">egory:Fuego_Burger?uselang=en</span></a></p><p>This is my first attempt to add something to OSM, so I'm sincerely hoping that I've just missed an easier, cleaner, friendlier way to do all of this.</p>
