Convention wisdom would say that a #Leica M-P (Typ 240) isn't the right camera to use to shoot the #aurora, but who cares about convention wisdom when it can do the job?

Last night was more magical than my iPhone camera could possibly capture. Pulsating, sparkling, dancing bright aurora exploding from a corona above my head and spreading in all directions. At one point it covered about 90% of the sky. #northernlights #corona #aurora #auroraborealis

It's started! I'm at 51.5°N latitude in a suburban town east of London and am seeing some magenta hue patches of the aurora in the night sky.

Was gathering some info for a friend who wanted to do an easy, child-friendly but "real" mountain hike with the family. Have mentioned it before, but my absolute favorite is the hike to the Lobhornhütte. The hike is good for kids (and adults too!) as it is not too steep, long and has different characters. Playing at the stream and lake is of course a big bonus.

Wanted to check when the hut opens this year and found this just stunning picture on their website, taken last year by Hon Wing Liu when there were lots of opportunities to see the northern lights in Switzerland.

The answer was: they open May 5th

Last night, a friend organised a nighttime bike ride on the ice road to the neighbouring village of Dettah. It's about 6.5km across the frozen bay. It was quite slippery on the glare ice, even with studded tires, so we went at a leisurely pace and chatted away. When we got to Dettah, as if on cue, the #aurora erupted into a dancing, swirling riot of colour. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen, which I hope comes across in these low res. photos. We stood enrapt in our bike helmets, or lay back on the ice to save our craning necks until it settled down into a placid glow in the distance before biking back to town.
