In announcing $18B in cuts to #NIH, the #Trump admin said the #health agency “promoted radical gender ideology to the detriment of America’s youth.” It cited a study of #transgender youth that measured their psychological & social well-being 2 yrs after they had been prescribed hormone treatments. The WH noted, correctly, that 2 of the patients in the 315 person study died by suicide. What it omitted is that this population is at high risk of suicidal thoughts & behaviors, depression & anxiety.

#Trump is planning to eliminate the National Center for Complementary & Integrative Health [#NCCIH], saving $170M. This is the center at #NIH charged w/examining whether supplements & other alternative medical treatments are helpful or dangerous.

#RFKJr clearly had a hand in this. Can’t have anybody proving his insane claims are false, like Vitamin A is an effective treatment for #measles [it’s not, & kids are ending up in the hospital w/ Vitamin A toxicity]

#Trump’s proposal slashes the #NIH #budget to $27B from ~$48B. The budget doc delivers a duplicitous rebuke to NIH, saying: “NIH has broken the trust of the American people w/wasteful spending, misleading information, risky research & the promotion of dangerous ideologies that undermine public health.” [written from Bizarro World]

The budget purports to refocus the #CDC on #infectious #diseases, but slashes funding for viral #hepatitis, #HIV & #STDs, lumping them into a single program at $300M.

Accelerating Access to Research Results: New Implementation Date for the 2024 NIH Public Access Policy
Earlier implementation of the Public Access Policy will help increase public confidence in the research we fund while also ensuring that the investments made by taxpayers produce replicable, reproducible, and generalizable results that benefit all #Americans.

Major #health cutbacks: The budget proposes massive cuts at the #NIH & #CDC, but it includes $500M for *Health* #RFKJr’s signature initiative: Make America Healthy Again. The CDC’s budget would be cut by more than half, to $4B from roughly $9B.

Significant reduction in #education: Education spending would fall by $12 billion under #Trump’s 2026 blueprint, w/the most significant cut coming from a plan to “streamline” #TitleI money for high-#poverty #schools & other #K12 programs.

Update. "#NIH under siege."
science.org/content/article/ni

"Nearly 3 months into President Donald Trump’s administration, NIH in-house scientists and other workers [are] reeling from mass layoffs of colleagues; the removal of leaders; and limits on travel, communication, and purchasing that have shut the agency off from the outside world, hamstrung experiments, and crushed the community’s spirits…The atmosphere is one of 'chaos and fear and frustration and anger,' said a senior scientist with NIH’s intramural research program…This scientist added: 'It’s this feeling of utter powerlessness and repeated insults.'"

#Scientists Say #NIH Officials Told Them To Scrub #mRNA References on #Grants
The mRNA technology is under study at the NIH for prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, including flu and AIDS, and also cancer. It was deployed in the development of covid-19 vaccines credited with saving 3 million lives in the U.S. alone — an accomplishment President Donald Trump bragged about in his first term.

Update. "Accelerating Access to Research Results: New Implementation Date for the 2024 #NIH Public Access Policy"
nih.gov/about-nih/who-we-are/n

"I am excited to announce that one of my first actions as NIH Director is pushing the accelerator on policies to make NIH research findings freely and quickly available to the public. The 2024 Public Access Policy, originally slated to go into effect on December 31, 2025, will now be effective as of July 1, 2025."

PS: This announcement is from the Trump-appointed NIH director, #JayBhattacharya. It's another sign that Trump has not revoked or weakened the #OSTP #NelsonMemo, despite other attacks on research, including #takedowns of #OpenAccess texts and data. At the NIH, the largest funding agency, implementation of the Nelson memo is even speeding up.

"Temporary court orders have allowed some scientists to get back to studying transgender health and COVID-19, while other funding has been reinstated without any appeals filed and without any apparent prompting from a judge."

But the haphazard and mysterious nature of the reinstatements gives scientists little clue as to why and how long these grants will stay in place.

#NIH #Grant Cuts Aren't Saving Money. They're Wasting It.
Terminating 750 NIH grants, gov dumped years of investment down drain. Unceremonious end to those projects means we won’t know answers to studies intended to improve #health of #Americans
#HHS data show $373M had already been spent on the 242 discontinued #R01 grants. Funding was pulled as some projects were getting off the ground, while others were rounding into their last year of funding
