'How is the media still getting the Gaza murdered paramedics story so wrong?
Israel's execution of 15 emergency workers a month ago is incontrovertibly established. So why are the Guardian and other outlets still so ready to fudge the issue?'

Jonathan Cook · How is the media still getting the Gaza murdered paramedics story so wrong?By Jonathan Cook

The BBC asked minority groups what they thought of the BBC:

"Participants...viewed journalism as a form of oppression that had the same impact on their lives as the police. Journalism in general, and the BBC in particular, they said, felt like an arm of the state."

Nieman LabThe BBC asked marginalized groups how it could do better. They didn’t hold back."They're going to the shop for sense-making, I think. And there's nothing on the shelf."

Of course they would, but that's also because they don't want to pay living wages, don't feel that respect is a two-way street, and feel entitled to use and abuse younger workers who are well aware of how their parents response to that abuse (which was often to work harder to try to get ahead) was met with yet more abuse.

Sorry, guys, the kids are on to how much you suck. That's not a personal failing on their part. They just don't want to play a rigged game that they're slated to lose and be discarded afterwards.

America’s basic problem is that we have an economic system that concentrates great wealth in few hands and we have a political system in which money is allowed to buy political power in a straightforward way and now, on top of that, we have a President who fully embraces—who lives for—the opportunity to make the world bow to him by exploiting those systems. It’s a bit surreal watching this all unfold right in front of us.

How Things Work · It's Not Looking GreatBy Hamilton Nolan

>There will be people who say, “Hey, you work for a company and that company has the right to expect employees to adhere to what’s good for the company”. That’s true except we’re talking about news organizations that have public obligations and who are obliged to nurture a free press in a democracy. Owners of such press organizations are responsible for safeguarding that free press— and trying to get in the good graces of an autocrat-in-waiting will only result in undermining that free press.

Under capitalism, news organizations have no such "public obligations" and are absolutely not "obliged to nurture a free press in a democracy." They are doing what they are designed to do: Invent Reality (or, if you prefer, Manufacture Consent).

I honestly think that reading Inventing Reality, by Michael Parenti, should be a prerequisite to working in journalism:
