Are there any good resources out there for how to help start/grow a community of people looking to break away from #BigTech, and perhaps digital technology in general, with an emphasis on helping non-technical people?

#Solarpunk/#LowTech/#Degrowth is definitely the right destination, but it's hard, I feel, to translate that into some sort of roadmap for people not already technically literate.

I did a bunch of cleaning to see if the fishes and other critters were still alive. And, this morning, I saw a tiny fish cruising the surface 😍

The cleaning left a lot of dirt still floating; as shown in the attached "put the iPhone into the swamp". No visible fauna, they probably got scared by my shadow and the landing of the phone.

A few years ago, I started keeping a paper running journal for 90% vain reasons. When I die, whatever online system I use will just … linger. No one’s gonna know it even existed. But half a shelf of notebooks? *Someone’s* gonna have to do *something* with them, and maybe they’ll open one and be like “whoa, Uncle J did some *really* stupid shit!”

La bande-annonce : 📽️ youtu.be/wwRnvgH98CE

When I build an earth house, I won't have the luxury of a large crew of helpers most of the time. I'm struggling to figure out how to get a big load of dirt 8 to 12 feet up in the air more easily than one 5-gallon bucket at a time.

The farm tractor I have access to won't reach that high with its bucket.

Anybody aware of any #lowtech designs for cranes or lifts? The catch is that it has to be portable because it needs to be repositioned as I build each wall, so I can't just sink a telephone pole in the ground and call it good.

I'm thinking a block and tackle would come in handy but I just can't picture the machine...

Hello Mastodon!

A brief #Introduction post after some time as a fediverse observer 👀.

I come from applied #Maths, and am still quite interested in related tech topics when they lead to more freedom and emancipation: #LowTech, #DIY, #FreeSoftware, #OpenSourceSoftware, #OpenData, etc.

In everyday life, a lot of my time is spent digging (and sometimes playing) some #Music, a bit of #Cycling, and #Cooking 🤤

My pronouns: he/him

BRUSSELS — BOOK LAUNCH — 29.4

→ How to make books more sustainable? During this evening, Low-tech Magazine will present our "Compressed Book Edition", this time in Brussels, at Architecture Curating Practice's gallery.

→ Inspired by the image compression on its solar-powered website, Low-tech Magazine squeezed the article catalog of their three-volume chronological book series into just one book. Compressing the content — an editorial and design choice — produces a larger reduction in resource use than printing on recycled paper could ever do.

🕰 18:30 Doors open
19:00 Book presentation and introduction of Low-tech Magazine
19:45 Q&A
20:00 Book sale / snacks & drinks / discussion

📌 Architecture curating practice,

Email has become too complicated for my dement mother. Also just reading a message doesn't work.

Is there such a thing as a cigarette-sized box, maybe with ePaper and SMS reception, no buttons no nothing, onto which we could send a short text "your gym session begins in 20 minutes" or something along those lines?

(Please don't say 'smartphone', you've no idea, and don't say Arduino and do it yourself.)

[Nouveau podcast] LHDG25.

📖 NEW BOOK 📖

→ Our new book - The Compressed Book edition - is available for sale in our online store! To reduce the resources involved with producing each copy, we squeezed our article archive (3 volumes) in just one book!

We did this by switching to a smaller font size (similar to the one used in the comments book), by downsizing most images, and by opting for a two-column layout. We rewrote some articles, especially older ones, resulting not only in fewer pages but also in better articles.

As all our books, it's printed on demand, which means they is no overproduction.

→ EVENT REMINDER
We are organising a book launch to celebrate in Barcelona (at Akasha Barcelona) this Friday (28.3). We will present the book and follow-up with a discussion on books and sustainability. We also have a number of copies for sale! All the info in the article below
