#lifer cake today: Zwergscharbe, Kreis Paderborn #birds in #watercolour #fieldnotes mit Dank an diesen sehr niedlichen und friedlichen Vogel vom Nesthauser See, der sich zeichnen ließ.

I have to wait until eBird confirms the sighting, but I think I saw a lifer that's rare for this time of year. iNaturalist suggested a Sage Thrasher and when I looked at other regional pictures, they look remarkably similar to this bird.

A small light brown bird with two white bars on its wings and a heavily spotted chest perches on a thin bare red branch. White stripes stretch back over its face from the short straight bill.

Hallo meine lieben Lebensformen,

ein Vogel, der schon sehr lange auf meiner Wunschliste stand und der durch sein spektakuläres Aussehen beeindruckt, ist der Schwertschnabelkolibri. November 2024 konnte ich ihn in Kolumbien mehrfach beobachten und auch fotografieren.

Tiere sind Freunde und kein Essen oder eine Plage.
Bleibt gesund, glücklich und verliebt. 
Der schlimmste Seelenschmerz ist das Fernweh.

A bird that has been on my wish list for a very long time and that impresses with its spectacular appearance is the Sword-billed Hummingbird. I was able to observe and photograph it several times in Colombia in November 2024.

Animals are friends, not food or a nuisance.

Mich hat gestern die -Maus gefragt, was mein Top-Lifer 2024 war.

Eine für mich gar nicht so leicht zu beantwortende Frage.

Ich hab mich dann aber für den Schwertschnabel-Kolibri entschieden. Er stand sehr lange auf meiner Wunschliste und hat sich so gegen echt harte Konkurrenz durchsetzten können.
Da waren u.a. der Kanaren-Schmutzgeier oder der Andenfelsenhahn. Und natürlich der Violetbart-Helmkolibri. Alle hätten sie den Platz als Top-Lifer 2024 verdient.

Jetzt bin ich auf Eure Top-Lifer 2024 gespannt.

Hail to the queen! My husband and I were thrilled to see this lovely female King Eider, a rare bird in our area, that’s been hanging around for about two weeks. I like this shot of her mid-flap in a swirl of bay water spray.

A little warbler with a blue-gray head and white eye-ring, with a yellow breast, pale throat and unbarred greenish-yellow wings sits on a leaning burnweed stem. The bird is clearly a Leiothlypis warbler, but the unbroken eye-ring mean it's a Nashville, not a Virginia's (not local to this area anyway) or the Orange-Crowned I first suspected.

Elegance on stilts.

An American Avocet feeding in a shallow blue marsh pond, its body in a curved position with its bill halfway submerged. This distinctive large shorebird has a very long, thin, slightly upturned bill, is white underneath, and has bold dark and white wings, black when breeding and brown in nonbreeding and immature plumage. A tiny sandpiper is also feeding nearby.

Runway ready. @CTGT and I were thrilled to add the lovely American Avocet species to our #lifer list today.

Seen from the classic "I nearly caught this bird in time" slightly-behind-from-the-side angle, a broad-winged seabird (brown above and white below) with a distinctive yellow, gray-tipped bill soars low over a deep blue ocean. Just visible at the base of the bill are the tubular nostrils distinctive to this order of birds.

Cavorting … this juvenile Reddish Egret danced, leapt in the air, and dashed about, frequently with its wings raised. Rare in the state where we were vacationing, let alone where we live a couple of states to the north, this entertaining lifer is one the best birds I’ve had the joy of seeing.

Lifer surprise! Following the repeated calls of a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, my husband and I located and photographed what we believed was a pair of them. To our delight, when we returned home and reviewed our pictures, we discovered that one of the birds was a Black-billed Cuckoo.

The respite after the scampering. The three Piping Plover chicks that completely captivated us ran very fast for short distances then stopped on a dime and kept repeating that pattern as they foraged. I think this one finally collapsed from the exertion. (Last plover chick picture for a while, I promise.)

Wicked heat and humidity curtailed our birding plans for this morning, so I went to the archives from a year ago when my husband and I got to see a rare lifer for our area, a Wurdemann’s heron, the result of mating between a great blue heron and a great white heron (found only in Florida).
