Michael A. Murphy :system76:<p>PSA to <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/rustlang" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rustlang</span></a> and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> developers: there is a long-standing bug in the system allocator (glibc malloc) which causes it to hoard large sbrk buffers in arenas. By default, it uses heuristics to dynamically increase the mmap threshold—the point where it switches from using sbrk to mmap. In some scenarios, these larger buffers are never trimmed, causing a memory "leak". Some <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/libcosmic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>libcosmic</span></a> apps were affected, causing as much as 10-30x memory usage. To fix, see the PR below:</p><p><a href="https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-bg/pull/73" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/pop-os/cosmic-bg/pu</span><span class="invisible">ll/73</span></a></p>
Benjamin Richardson<p>In the interest of improving my rust skills, I've been working on a music app using <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/libcosmic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>libcosmic</span></a>. It's still in the toy stage, but it's capable of playing, pausing, and scrubbing through a list of tracks. </p><p>Learning lots and starting to feel more confident! Will make the repository public once I clean things up (unused dependencies and unwrap()s everywhere 😅)</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/cosmic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cosmic</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/rust" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rust</span></a></p>
Michael A. We would appreciate any help with API improvements and documentation.</p><p>[0] <a href="https://github.com/edfloreshz/cosmic-app-template/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/edfloreshz/cosmic-a</span><span class="invisible">pp-template/</span></a><br>[1] <a href="https://pop-os.github.io/libcosmic/cosmic/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">pop-os.github.io/libcosmic/cos</span><span class="invisible">mic/</span></a></p>

Michael A. Murphy :system76:<p>COSMIC Terminal now supports themes, a settings UI, and context menus. It's been making rapid progress! It was only a winit window a few days ago.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/CosmicDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CosmicDE</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/CosmicDesktop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CosmicDesktop</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/iced" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iced</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/libcosmic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>libcosmic</span></a></p>
Rachael Ava 💁🏻‍♀️<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@system76" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>system76</span></a></span> I would like to take a moment to mention that I plan to develop GUI applications using <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/libcosmic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>libcosmic</span></a>. I've already started tinkering with libcosmic, and it's clear that I have a lot more to learn to develop GUI applications. I experimented a lot with <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/SwiftUI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SwiftUI</span></a> when it first released, and can confidently say I was able to design good UIs with SwiftUI, so in time, I may be able to make good UIs with libcosmic.</p>
Michael A. Murphy :system76:<p>Implemented a responsive FlexBox-like container for <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/icedrs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>icedrs</span></a> in <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/libcosmic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>libcosmic</span></a>; named FlexRow as it lays elements left to right in a column of rows. It's being used in the Wallpaper settings page in cosmic-settings now. A lot of progress in the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/CosmicDesktop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CosmicDesktop</span></a> lately. The stacked floating windows in cosmic-comp are one of my new favorite features.</p>
