Attention all Skype users! Microsoft is ending support for Skype, but don't worry—the transition to Jitsi is super easy. You don't even need to create an account. Just visit https://meet.jit.si/ or run your own server with https://jitsi.org/blog/introducing-jaas-components/

I am planning also to setup my own @owncast instance, planning to to this along @lqdev .
He sent me a link for a #jitsi server, provided by a #FSF membership.
How does the #fediverse feels about memberships that include accounts to a #owncast, #mastodon, #ghost, #peertube, etc. instances? Similar to cooperatives.

I moved our weekly virtual drinks party from Skype to Jitsi a few weeks ago, after Microsoft fumbled the transition from Skype to #Teams and one of us couldn't join. I'm really impressed by the way Jitsi has come on since I last tried it in 2020: not only is the connection clear and stable, but #Jitsi makes better use of our inadequate bandwidth than #Skype ever did.
@yakkoj no one ever, in the history of my Jitsi server, told me to use Webex or Teams as a better alternative.
Viele schon seit etlichen Jahren. Möglichst nachhaltig und Open Source.

Working through the suggested alternatives to Zoom, starting with #Jitsi - but it appears to want me to login using Facebook (hahahahaha), Google (hahahahahahahahahahaha) or GitHub. Now, the latter I can do. But I've heard rumblings about that site too.
Why would anyone offering an alternative to Zoom suggest these as the only login methods?
I've been using jitsi.meet as a free non-USA alternative to Zoom, googlemeet, and the truly dire Teams.
It works, noise suppression isn't great and as a host you have to login via a corporate login service like Google or Github (I'm an old git and use that as least worse). But certainly a viable alternative.

Are you still stuck using proprietary software to talk to your coworkers and loved ones? #Jitsi Meet respects your freedom and privacy, and #FSF associate members can spread that freedom by using our FSF instance, whose rooms can be created and moderated with an FSF account, not one by big tech.
