What started as a joke has somehow turned into me competing in the pairs division of the UK Jigsaw Puzzle National Championship tomorrow!

Surprisingly unbothered by nerves, although I do hope we can avoid coming dead last. Anything else will be considered a great success.

I made a video all about training so far, so if you like endless timelapses of people being bad at puzzles you can see that at @michellemay (or on my YT).

But the actual event itself will be livestreamed at youtube.com/@UKJPA/streams from 11:45am UK time, so maybe you'll be able to spot me in the background somewhere.

I'm hoping in the wide fediverse someone can help.

Back in the 1970s my family had an illusion jigsaw puzzle that looked like abstract flowy colour blobs, but when you finished putting it together you rolled it into a tube with a piece of reflective material and suddenly you could see the image clearly, a large group of people in a historical setting.

Does that sound familiar to anyone?

And this is so frustrating! Brand new, as virtually all my jigsaws are. I’ll tell you if it’s a swop. Maybe this is a feature of #Banksy ? I’m debating whether to just bin it. Certainly won’t give it to a charity shop. I’ve checked the floor, the table legs, the chair legs, the skirting boards etc in case the piece got lodged anywhere, or fell off the table. Nothing. There are no pets, no kids and no smokers here, so I’m thinking that piece never existed in the first place. Still, if you want it, I’ll post it - otherwise it’s going in the bin. It was pretty challenging once the maid and the graffiti were done. Everything else was either pavement or white wall. #JigsawPuzzle #Banksy

Well, Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night is now complete. This was not an easy one to complete. There was minor damage to one piece, which I have attempted to repair. See all the photos attached. It’s a 1,000 piece jigsaw, and is now ready for a new owner. Please DM me an address if you would like it. No charge, though if you want to contribute, feel free to make a donation to a charity of your choice.

A jigsaw of 100 pieces showing the painting Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. The painting is in oils, and features blues, yellows, greens, and many dark colours. It shows a swirly starry sky, with a yellow crescent moon in the upper right, swirls of whitish/pale mist or cloud, several stars in various unfocused circles of yellow or white. There are hills or mountains across the mid section, and a town in the lower third right of the picture. A large brown/black/dark curved structure is to the prominent left, with several different points on it as it narrows going upward to the top of the painting. I have circled in red where the damaged piece fits in the bottom row centre of the jigsaw.

There are green/brown swirls to the left, some green/blue horizontal lines in the area, and some cream and orange and black brush strokes to the right. A small piece of dark brown plastic highlights the missing part.
The missing part filled in - using some Loctite glue and some paper pieces, I attempted [badly] to remake the missing half of the jigsaw piece, and the coloured it with a black marker. The piece of dark brown plastic is a backer joining the pieces on either side to the missing part.

This was a huge challenge and has taken weeks to do - I’m feeling pleased that I managed it.
This is the famous #DarkHedges in Northern Ireland, which featured in #GameOfThrones. This photograph was taken by my friend Yvonne, who is #TandemPhotography. You can find all her prints and calendars and jigsaws on a site of the same name.
It’s almost a monochrome image, as the green is far more subtle than it looks in this picture. On the upside the pieces are strong and very well cut, and will only fit together correctly - no duplicates. So if you would like a challenge, I’ll be more than happy to send it your way.
