Richard Ashwell<p>Incinerators: New plans to limit burning rubbish for energy</p><p>Ministers say fresh rules announced today will limit the development of new waste incinerators, which burn rubbish to make electricity and emit gases that are harmful for the environment.</p><p>Just under half of all the UK's household rubbish is now burned, and a recent&nbsp;BBC investigation&nbsp;showed that incinerating bin bags, which can release large amounts of carbon dioxide, was as bad for the climate as burning coal.</p><p><a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgrl72e975o" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgrl7</span><span class="invisible">2e975o</span></a></p><p><a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/Climate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Climate</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/ClimateChange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateChange</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/pollution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pollution</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/incinerators" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>incinerators</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/incineration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>incineration</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/waste" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>waste</span></a></p>
Richard Ashwell<p>Flies, rats and offers of hush money - the price of living next to a ‘monster’ incinerator</p><p>“We have been inundated with flies, rats, smell, noise. It's just been horrendous,” says Mandy Royle, who lives in the closest home to the UK’s biggest <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/waste" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>waste</span></a> incinerator at Runcorn in Cheshire.</p><p>The facility generates electricity from burning nearly a million tonnes of household <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/rubbish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rubbish</span></a> every year - but much of that waste doesn't come from Ms Royle's local area. Like many <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/incinerators" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>incinerators</span></a>, deliveries come from hundreds of miles away.</p><p>BBC analysis suggests the burden of the UK's waste is disproportionately falling on deprived areas such as Runcorn, which are 10 times more likely to have an <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/EnergyFromWaste" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EnergyFromWaste</span></a> incinerator in their midst than in the wealthiest areas.</p><p><a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwylepd79d5o" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwylep</span><span class="invisible">d79d5o</span></a></p><p><a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/plastic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>plastic</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/PlasticPollution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PlasticPollution</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/PlasticWaste" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PlasticWaste</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/Climate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Climate</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/ClimateChange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateChange</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/pollution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pollution</span></a></p>
