MikeDunnAuthorToday in Labor History April 13, 1953: CIA Director Allen Dulles launched the MKUltra mind control program. The program ran from 1953 to 1973. It involved giving human subjects LSD and other drugs, often without their knowledge. Then, researchers would try to “weaken” their minds and force confessions through brainwashing and psychological torture. Over 7,000 U.S. war veterans were unwitting test subjects, as well as many Canadian and U.S. civilians. The program was a continuation of Nazi mind-control experiments, which utilized mescaline against Jews and Soviet prisoners, hoping it could be exploited as a “truth” serum. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS), precursor of the CIA, recruited many of these Nazi torturers in the wake of World War II to exploit their knowledge and research. MKUltra was headed by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, who later devised plans to kill Fidel Castro with an exploding cigar, and saturating his shoes with radioactive thallium to make his beard fall out. He also tried to assassinate Patrice Lumumba, Prime Minister of Congo, with poison. Several well-known liberals and radicals knowingly participated in MKUltra and its OSS predecessors, either as test subjects (e.g., Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Hunter), or as researchers (e.g., anthropologists Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson). Others who have been alleged to have been victims or volunteers include Sirhan Sirhan, Ted Kaczyinski, Charles Manson, and Whitey Bulger. For a really fascinating look at Margaret Mead's and Gregory Bateson’s exploration with hallucinogens and their connection to MKUltra, check out the recent book, Tripping on Utopia, by Benjamin Breen. And for a truly amazing documentary on the 1961 CIA-supported coup in Congo, check out the 2024 documentary, “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat.” But the film is really about so much more than the coup. AnarchoNinaAnalyzesIn the lead up to the US 2024 election, I made it a sort of policy not to take anyone claiming Donald Trump was "anti-war" seriously; after all, I was conscious during his first presidency and I have a very clear memory of him engaging in nuclear brinksmanship with North Korea via social media, dropping the largest conventional bomb in Afghanistan just to prove he could, and actively *trying* to start a war with Iran - in addition to his material support for the KSA's war in Yemen, scaling up airstrikes and drone attacks in our ongoing wars, as well as a significant increase in American covert military operations which often had disastrous consequences. Perhaps most tellingly, Trump increased US military spending each and every single year during his first four years in office. As such I found it pretty laughable when motivated observers, including a few in "independent" media claiming to be progressives, defended the rise of Elon Musk's DOGE initiative by suggesting the Trump regime would find and end "fraud, waste, and abuse" in the Pentagon budget. In so much as I bothered to engage with these arguments, I predicted that neither Trump nor Musk would touch the military budget, or any other part of the US government that's about committing violence against their perceived enemies, including domestically; with the possible exception of an FBI Trump still hates because they investigated him for crimes he absolutely committed. As such, I can't say I was surprised to learn that during a sit-down meeting with noted genocidal fascist warmonger and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump bragged about his intentions to *increase* U.S. military spending to literally a trillion dollars.<a href="https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-trillion-military-budget" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank">https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-trillion-military-budget</a>Trump Pledges $1 Trillion for US Military While Hitting Working Class With Huge Tax Hike"President Donald Trump on Monday publicly backed an annual budget of roughly $1 trillion for the U.S. military as his administration rushed ahead with a destructive tariff scheme that amounts to a major tax increase on American households, with working-class families set to bear much of the pain.Speaking to reporters at the White House during a sit-down with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said his administration has signed off on an upcoming military budget in the vicinity of $1 trillion, which would be a record sum. If you take a step back and simply look at the argument people defending DOGE are presenting here, the whole game falls apart:- Health inspectors, disease specialists, labor board adjudicators, consumer protection departments, food and drug inspectors, IRS officials working to get the super rich to pay the taxes they owe, feeding starving children in conflict zones, Inspector Generals that oversee government officials, Medicaid and SNAP benefits, the social security check that means your grandma isn't living on cat food? Waste, fraud, and abuse. - A bloated Pentagon wholly captured by the military industrial complex, that literally cannot pass an audit, is already a source of large-scale fraud and waste, and currently spends more money on "defense" than any other country on earth by a degree that's objectively mind blowing; particularly when you factor in that we're not *officially* involved in a major war at the moment? Vitally important spending and in fact a reason to celebrate!Look folks, I'm creeping closer and closer to my fiftieth year on this Earth, so you don't need to tell me that imperialism and obscene military spending is a bipartisan objective in American politics. The critique I'm articulating about Trump's spending on the murder machine could just as easily have been written about every Democrat President in the post-war era. What an absurdity"Imagine my bewilderment when Donald Trump and his “first buddy”, South African-born Elon Musk, declared that we Afrikaners are a threatened species; that our black compatriots are engaged in a “genocide”; that we are victims of oppression and discrimination and as such offered special refugee status in the United States – at the very point in time that thousands of migrants to that country are being repelled or deported. The US state department is even preparing “refugee centres” in Pretoria to house these “victims”.The criticisms and threats coming from Trump, his secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and Musk outraged the majority of South Africans because the claims were patently false and were seen as unacceptable meddling with internal affairs. A section of the white population, however – the ethnic Afrikaner nationalists and separatists – welcomed the US intervention, leading to harsh exchanges with racial undertones on social and other media.Just for the record: Afrikaners are generally better off today than prior to 1994, when they gave up political power; materially, culturally and in terms of personal freedom.South Africa’s progressive constitution with its extensive bill of rights is intact; the rule of law is maintained and the judiciary is independent and functioning; we are a genuinely open society with free speech and media that many other democracies, especially Trump’s America, can be jealous of."So let's review here for a second. According to the regime, hundreds of thousands of migrants fleeing a country destabilized by US policy to the point that it's being run by armed gangs, Haiti, are not deserving of US protection and harboring. But specifically white Afrikaners whose rights and liberties are being protected by a coalition government in South Africa that has a better human rights record than the US does, are endangered refugees who need to actively lured to the United States and offered the smoothest possible path to US citizenship because, um, Trump read fake fascist "news" stories about white farmers having their land seized by the South African government? A thing that objectively did not happen, but probably should have given the vast racialized wealth inequality still remaining from the fallout of the white nationalist Apartheid regime that ended in 1994. Well that sure sounds "about white."Is this policy about appeasing white nationalists littered throughout the Trump regime? Yes. Is this policy about Trump doing a favor for his billionaire South African-born nazi donor Elon Musk; a man raised under the Apartheid system? Also yes. Is all of this just straight up racism and ethno-nationalist policy? Yes yet again. AnarchoNinaAnalyzesOne of the most important necessary illusions to maintain (largely bipartisan) public support for the American war on migrants, is the idea that the fascist repression structures used to target brown noncitizens are only been used on "bad hombre" criminals who have snuck across the border for nefarious purposes. Bizarrely, this delusion remains popular with a US public that would rather not see how the sausage is made, even as the Trump regime actively targets migrant communities in America who have been granted state protection, are seeking asylum, and are otherwise "playing by the rules" that supposedly justifies brutalizing anyone who isn't following "the process" to enter and reside in the United States.For example, since Trump took office back on January 20th, 2025, the regime has revoked the protected status and demanded the "self-deportation" of hundreds of thousands of law abiding immigrants registered with and monitored by government programs designed to curb illegal entry into the United States by offering a legal pathway to residency; including many people who are residing in America precisely because US foreign policy and exploitation has rendered their countries of origin objectively unsafe to return to. When you combine the figures provided in this article alone, we're talking about the rapid expulsion of almost two million people who are objectively *not* the bloodthirsty "illegal" predators the regime claims these policies are designed to stop; newsflash, hardcore narco-terrorists don't register with the US government via phone app when they arrive in America. They are however nonwhite people Stephen Miller can parade in front of an extremely racist American public in a sort of fascist theater show designed to assure crackers that the government is "keeping them safe" from people with the wrong skin tone. Furthermore, despite what the Trump regime would have you believe about deterrence, anyone who has studied the history of US immigration laws can tell you that shutting off the legal pathways for, again, what amount to refugees of US imperialist policy, to enter and remain in the United States will simply *increase* the number of undocumented people who sneak into the country illegally. MikeDunnAuthorSuper exciting and inspiring to see so many people out there yesterday. Truly historic numbers of participants. And in spite of my following comments, I think demos like these are critical. If nothing else, they show the world that we are not sheep, that we oppose the fascist regime. It gives the government a taste of how strong we can be. Large demos like these provide a forum for activists to communicate with each other, share ideas, agitate for more radical changes. And it is empowering to be part of large demos, particularly for those who haven't done it before, instilling some hope in these dark times.But here are a couple of things to consider:(1) "Hands Off" is a liberal, not a leftist, slogan, devoid of anti-capitalist critique. Consider that the posters included "Hands Off NATO." That piece suggests that at least some organizers and participants actually support imperialist wars and interventions. NATO is one of the most anti-working-class organizations there is. Its entire purpose (contrary to the propaganda) is to pit working-class soldiers against each other in order to protect existing, and acquire new, territory, markets, and workers for the benefit of capitalists.(2) "Hands Off Medicare, Social Security, libraries, immigrants, trans folks, etc." are necessary and existential short-term goals. But, at best, success brings us back to the pre-Trump status quo, which wasn't particularly good for most working-class people, nor for members of most marginalized communities. We need to be demanding a lot more (which many activists at yesterday’s demos were calling for).(3) Some of the posters demanded "Fair Elections." But what does this even mean in a representative democracy? Yes, the Republicans have certainly exploited gerrymandering, the electoral college system, and voter suppression to win elections, sometimes even in spite of losing the popular vote. In fact, there are some who think Texas, with the 7th & 8th largest African American communities in the country (Dallas, Houston), would vote blue if not for gerrymandering and voter suppression. But then what? We'd still just be voting for who gets to rule over us and those rulers would still be primarily rich people, whose interests and policies align much more with the CEOs and corporate bosses than with working-class people. If the past is any indication, Democrats would still be supporting Zionism & Genocide, government suppression of strikes and worker movements (e.g., the recent train strike), imperialist & NATO interventions abroad. We'd still have millions living in the streets and millions dependent on food stamps and food pantries. We'd still have snowballing climate change and a government hamstrung by its subservience to capital. Let’s not forget, under Clinton, a Democrat, we got NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, the anti-worker NAFTA, and an “End to Welfare as We Know It.” And under Obama we got drone assassinations of U.S. citizens living abroad and a continuation of Bush’s mass deportations and imprisonment of immigrant children.Optimistically, there were many people at yesterday’s demos who ARE thinking about these issues and fighting for far more than just a return to the pre-Trump status quo. There were lots of anti-genocide signs and posters and solidarity with Palestinians. Many demanding bodily autonomy for all, including both access to birth control and abortion, as well as access to gender affirming care. There were many demonstrators calling for a General Strike, which has far more potential to achieve results than do mass demonstrations. (Direct Action gets the Goods!) So, let’s continue with these large mass demos. But let’s also start organizing direct actions that hurt the rulers’ bottom line.
