As we explore privilege and entitlement and #patriarchy, there are so many things men simply won't face, or don't believe are happening, or deep down are not able to face.

Because they're weak.

And it doesn't matter how conservative a woman is, if she has a #miscarriage and her husband is not a safe person to talk to, these husbands don't know that they don't know that there have been miscarriages.

That is something that men, ought to be telling other men.

"The organization of sex and gender once had functions other than itself—it organized society. Now, it mainly organizes and reproduces itself. The kinds of relationships sexuality established in the dim human past still dominate our sexual lives, our ideas about men and women, and the ways we raise our children. But they lack the functional load they once carried. One of the most conspicuous features of kinship is that it has been systematically stripped of its functions—political, economic, educational, and organizational. It has been reduced to its barest bones—sex and gender...

we are not only oppressed as women; we are oppressed by having to be women—or men as the case may be. I personally feel that the feminist movement must dream of even more than the elimination of the oppression of women. It must dream of the elimination of obligatory sexualities and sex roles. The dream I find most compelling is one of an androgynous and genderless (though not sexless) society, in which one’s sexual anatomy is irrelevant to who one is, what one does, and with whom one makes love."

(Gayle Rubin, "The Traffic in Women")

Indeed, we're perpetually supposed to be the supporting act, and we're very far from shaking that notion out of our collective subconscious. I can't stand seeing that in myself and so try to break through it:

✨ I am quirky, clever, and make interesting, original, and beautiful things.✨

Let's hear it, ladies. How about you? Say it loud and proud because, for fuck's sake, we're not kicking this can down another generational line!

sometimes I'm tempted to reach out to trumpy family members just to ask them to pinpoint *exactly which year* of America's "greatness" they're trying to return to.

reminds me of the time I was asking my mom questions to pinpoint where, exactly, she thought feminism had gone "too far." i was like... so should women have the right to vote? and there was a VERY LONG PAUSE before she reluctantly agreed that yes, voting was okay.

that pause was tooooo damn long.

My feminist SF web-novel Mars Needed Women is complete! 23,300 words in 31 chapters, one chapter posted each day throughout March, the last posted 23 minutes ago as I write this. Check out the cover art.

To read, either use the hashtag #RSMarsNeededWomen or this link to the first chapter: eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/11408894 The full novel is in the thread. Just scroll to read.

“A hopeful deeply-dystopian feminist SF story, with thinly veiled jabs at our current world's bad actors making for a bad future. Please note the past tense in the title: Mars Needed Women. The story's women are going to work to bring down the system, at least that part that's oppressing them, in a massive unscheduled disassembly.”

I'll leave it up for you to read for at least a week. After that, I'm revising it for later secondary publication.

"because female-looking nipples are sexually explicit nudity but male-looking nipples aren't!"

"says who?"

".... Men!"

*gestures "there you go"*

"wElL aCtUaLlY, the ones who complain about women going topless in public are other women!"

1. This is not true. Look at the genders of most of the repliers on any social media post about #freeTheNipple

2. Even if it was, the presence of internalized #misogyny does not disprove #patriarchy.

3. Even if women were the ones to complain the loudest about other women going topless in public, men are the ones deciding on the legislation and censorship policies that categorize "female nipples" as "sexually explicit nudity" but not "male nipples".

Today in Labor History March 29, 1797: William Godwin married Mary Wollstonecraft. Godwin was an English journalist, philosopher and novelist. And one of the first modern proponents of anarchism. His most famous books are “An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice” and “Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams,” a mystery novel that attacks aristocratic privilege. Wollstonecraft was a British writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights, and is regarded by many as one of the founding feminist philosophers. Her most famous book was “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” (1792). She died 11 days after giving birth to her second daughter, Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein.
