📣 #DMA: European Commission falls short on interoperability requirements for Apple

Despite initial promising steps, the @EUCommission 's measures on Apple’s compliance with interoperability procedures under the Digital Markets Act fall short.

The less stringent obligations on API documentation and long deadlines for interoperability solutions will impact how #FreeSoftware projects get interoperability from Apple.

What happened to 'interoperability by design'?

In December, 2024, the @EUCommission had proposed an interesting path for Apple to achieve higher standards of interoperability under the #DMA. The final version excluded several of these requirements.

A coalition of organisations and experts have weighted the positives and negatives of the final decision of how developers can request #interoperability from #Apple.

It’s time for real interoperability. Let’s make it happen.

The #DMA targets walled gardens and messaging interoperability. Meta, the designated gatekeeper, offers an solution that falls short of its goals.

The XMPP Standards Foundation (@xmpp) publishes an Open Letter to Meta, to advocate for adoption of #XMPP for messaging interoperability.

Google search and the Play Store fall foul of the Digital Markets Act rules, says the EU.

Both services are suspected of breaching the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), per preliminary findings announced Wednesday.

The DMA applies to a handful of tech giants. Aspects of Google’s business have been under investigation by the EU since March 2024, shortly after the regime came into force.
