The cross is supposed to have originally stood at the meeting of the three roads opposite the gaol. Some years ago it was taken down, and for a considerable time lay amongst a heap of stones. When this building was enlarged, and through the influence of the late Captain Norway, RN, then governor of the gaol, permission was obtained from the committee for its erection. A base was accordingly provided by them, upon which the monument was placed where it now stands.
It is a very fine monolith, and is in a good state of preservation. The head is beaded; the shaft Is very narrow at the neck, and has a remarkable entasis.
The cross on the front is inclined to the right, while that on the back is upright, and has a small circular hole in the centre.

Stumbled across this cross, known as a Preaching Cross, just east of Bodmin Jail. This tall, wheel-headed cross could date back to the Celtic period, or perhaps the medieval era. Spent a year or two before settling on a name for our 3 acre slice of Cornish paradise, part ancient woodland, part open-field / glade. I wanted something #Cornish & unique so came up with Trevargos which means "Home of the Buzzard" or there-abouts in the Cornish language. The land often has Buzzards soaring above and calling out, they have a spiritual significance for me too
