Chloe the cartographer<p>Far from finished, but this is the extended shape the improved land of Nicea. The new sections are to the far west and east. Seeing the ocean on both sides really frames the continent and aesthetically improves the map more than I would have guessed. Chloe the cartographer<p>I’m back once again to the magical land of Nicea. The client has been using the map in family games and now wants to extend the map to the east and west so it shows the whole continent which will look great. Chloe the cartographer<p>Underground ruins map for Mike Shea of @slyflourish, which will also feature in the city of arches kickstarter source book. As ever this map features unexpected encounters. My favourite, was drawing “a goblin village built inside the decaying skeleton of a giant dragon, but make it a *happy* village”. How do you draw a happy goblin village built amongst crumbling bones, I ask myself?… bunting is my answer. Chloe the cartographer<p>The Undercity of Mike Shea’s City of Arches. A dark dangerous subterranean city in ruins. I used the cave walls and exposed rock strata to emphasise the underground vibe, with complex multi directional lighting and many small bright light sources selling the subterranean environment. Chloe the cartographer<p>Colour regional map for the regions around the City of Arches which is now funding in Kickstarter. The fun thing about drawing maps for Mike is the random unusual high fantasy locations, “a fort shaped like a demons skull surrounded by a bone moat with towers sparking lightning”. Or “village on stilts with a headless stone statue”. Ha ha, it’s so much fun attempting these mad challenges. Chloe the cartographer<p>City map for Mike Shea‘s City of Arches, now at Kickstarter, I did this a while back, so it was fun to come back to colour it. I used two point perspective, which gives a feeling of depth and scale, and has some really challenging features to draw like the giant statues. Chloe the cartographer<p>The layout is a product of its many uses over the years, with the roof garden, dome house and orangery being added later on. I love the layered cake like look of the cross section, emphasised by the two point perspective. This was always my intention for this map, but I think I prefer it without. I might need to layer on a hatching pattern so it’s easier to differentiate the land use. Chloe the cartographer<p>Moonshae isles region of the Dungeons and Dragons continent of Faerun. A windswept archipelago drawn on a 17th century naval themed map.
