#Rustic #Forest, 2021

This was one of those days where I was excited to take wonderful photos in a forest I was visiting, only to find out most of the photos I took didn't turn out as the exposure and filter were all wrong. I decided to play around with this anyhow and ended up liking the rustic effect, like an old photo. You can be the judge. All a part of the journey, nonetheless.

A fresh breeze chopping the waters. Little Swift River Pond, Appalachian Trail, western Maine, September 18, 1983.

Beneath a deep blue sky with a few puffy clouds we are standing along the boulder-strewn shoreline of a mountain pond. A fresh breeze is chopping the waters, which are an even deeper blue. The pond is encircled by a forest of spruce and fir. A stretch along the far shore is marshy, with tall water grasses and the husks of dead trees, stripped of bark and left to bleach in the sun and rain.

A crystal clear North Maine Woods day can really make autumn colors pop.

September 29, 1983. Boardman Mountain and the Whitecap range from Little Boardman Mountain, Appalachian Trail, North Maine Woods.

Beneath a cloudless sky of deep light blue, we are standing atop a mountain looking across a valley to a ridge, then another valley, then a mountain a bit higher than the one we are on. A large fir tree frames the photo on the right, several branches of another fir frame the lower left. Everything else in view is covered with a forest of mostly hardwoods in full autumn foliage. There are bright light greens, golds, oranges and reds, with occasional dark greens of fir and spruce. There are wider strips of evergreen forest on the other mountain, but still plenty of fall colors. Other mountains are visible along the horizon, including the lofty Whitetop Range top left.

Wetlands in autumn, Teal Pond, White Memorial Foundation, Morris, Connecticut. October 26, 2023, 3:33 PM.

Beneath a deep blue October sky with streaky white clouds, we are standing beside a large marsh surrounded a small, placid pool of water covered with lily pads. The water grasses and other aquatic plants of the marsh have mostly turned a deep golden brown. A large swath are sporting bright white blossoms, and several taller shrubs scattered throughout are decked out in vibrant red foliage. Tall, stately pines, hemlocks and hardwoods border the far side of the wetlands, the latter with past peak foliage in rust, golden brown and brick red.

Early morning sunshine and mist. Forest near Park Road, Waterbury, Connecticut. November 13, 2021, 8:23 AM.

A forest of trees that have lost most but not all of their leaves. Those that remain are golden in the soft backlighting of the early morning sun, which is shining through the trees. One small tree in the foreground has faded red leaves that look pink. The sky is a pale blue. A very light mist hangs in the air. The forest floor is a carpet of recently fallen leaves.

Turning towards autumn, overlooking Herron Pond, White Memorial Foundation, Morris, Connecticut. October 12, 2023, 2:34 PM.

Beneath a deep blue sky with dozens of small fair weather clouds, looking down from a ridgeline several hundred feet to a large undeveloped pond surrounded by forest. Most of the pond is covered with hundreds of lily pads turning bright yellow green and gold with the season, the rest mirrors the sky. The forest is a mix of pines, hemlocks and hardwoods. The latter are beginning to turn bright golds and oranges.

Beneath a dark dramatic hazy cloudy sky a setting sun burns through most of the haze to create a golden orb and paint the clouds around it and the bottoms of more distant clouds gold and orange. We are standing on a rock ridge crest above a small lake. A branch of scrub oak, covered with bright red leaves is just in front of us. Beyond the lake is a lower wooded ridge, reflected on the calm lake surface along with the sky.

Autumn rainstorm. Mad River ravine, Wolcott, Connecticut October 19, 2020, 5:48 PM

A wide stream runs through a narrow wooded ravine past the remnants of an old stone wall. Most of the trees are tall hemlocks and pines, but a cluster of young hardwoods in the background sport bright yellow and green autumn foliage. The forest floor is very rocky and carpeted with fallen leaves and tree limbs, moss, ferns and small leafy shrubs. The stream is running high and fast, runoff from a storm that is just winding down to light drizzle.

We see glimpses of the rainy overcast sky between the trees and mirrored on the lake surface. A small inlet of the lake with numerous lily pads is visible with a flock of 13 Canadian geese swimming on its surface. in the background are trees with bright gold, green orange and red foliage.
