eightyMaybe the one thing i don't like about Ardour is that my iCON Platform Nano isn't really supported. This may not even be Ardour's fault but because of bad MCP programming from iCON. I have to switch banks manually which is annoying with a one fader device. Tried manipulating the device info files but no solution yet. MarcelWelches Linux für das Tonstudio oder Musikproduktion?Wahrscheinlich habt ihr schon mein Tutorial gelesen, wie man <a href="https://trancefish.de/2022/06/06/vst-plugins-unter-linux-benutzen/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">VST-Plugins unter Linux</a> installiert. Falls nicht, könnt ihr das nachholen. Der Artikel ist noch immer aktuell und Tools wie Wine oder Yabridge erleichtern einem das Leben sehr. Außerdem gibt’s mittlerweile wirklich viele VST3-Plugins als native Linuxplugins, CLAP setzt sich als Standard auch immer weiter durch. Aber natürlich taucht die Frage auf:Welches Linux ist für Musikproduzenten am Besten geeignet?Es gibt zig verschiedene Linuxdistributionen. Linux selbst ein sogenannter Kernel, also das eigentliche Betriebssystem, dass die Software mit der Hardware kommunizieren lässt. Der Kernel verwaltet die Ressourcen. Eine Distribution, wie zum Beispiel Ubuntu, ist die Zusammenstellung der Software, die auf Linux läuft. Heißt: Du brauchst eine Benutzeroberfläche, einen Dateimanager, ein ZIP-Programm, eine Sprachausgabe, eine Officelösung und so weiter. Dieses Modell mit „Distributionen“ ist für die meisten Benutzer halt sehr verwirrend. Klar gibt’s Windows Home und Windows Professional. Es gibt auch Windows Server. Aber alles in allem ist alles halt Windows. Sieht aus, wie Windows. Fühlt sich an, wie Windows. Wenn du also neu mit Linux anfängst und ansonsten wenig Ahnung vom Betriebssystem hast, brauchst du eine Distribution, bei der alles mögliche schon ordentlich vorkonfiguriert ist. Da gibt’s einige fertige Distributionen, die sich normalerweise innerhalb weniger Minuten installieren lassen.Ubuntu StudioUbuntu hat seinerzeit dafür gesorgt, dass die Leute sich überhaupt mal mit Linux befassen wollten. Da es seit jeher auf Debian basiert, hatte man eine solide Basis, die sich vergleichsweise einfach installieren ließ. Der größte Unterschied zwischen Ubuntu und Debian war damals, dass Canonical (die Firma hinter Ubuntu) durchaus auch proprietäre Software einsetzte, also kein Opensource, um es den Usern möglichst einfach zu machen, die High-End-Grafikkarte oder spezielle Hardware zu nutzen und vieles mehr. Bei Debian ist es auch möglich, closed-source zu verwenden, aber da muss man an Config-Dateien rumfummeln und so weiter. Ubuntu Studio ist eine Distribution, die sich an Kreative wendet. Also Grafiker, Videokünstler, Sounddesigner, Fotografen und so weiter. Nicht zuletzt auch an Musiker. Das heißt, es gibt den Kernel, also das Linux und dazu dann eben eine bunte Sammlung an Software (Distribution), die einem den Einstieg in Musikproduktion erleichtert. Nachteil ist, dass man halt auch jede Menge Software dazu bekommt, die man als Musikschaffender nicht unbedingt braucht. Es ist kein Problem, die Software zu deinstallieren, die man nicht benötigt.<a href="https://ubuntustudio.org/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ubuntu-Studio, offizielle Seite</a>Fedora Jam LabFedora Linux ist eine der älteren Distributionen und gilt als extremst stabil und gleichzeitig ziemlich aktuell. Wie Ubuntu Studio, gibt’s bei Fedora Jam bereits fertig konfigurierte Audioserver, es werden DAWs wie Ardour mitgeliefert. Im Gegensatz zu z.B. Ubuntu Studio arbeiten die Fedora-Entwickler nicht mit Long-Term-Versionen. Es gibt alle 6 Monate eine neue Version des OS, die man aber relativ einfach updaten kann.Ein Vorteil ist, dass die meisten Pakete aktueller sind, als es bei Ubuntu Studio ist. Fedora selbst ist auf dem Desktop auch nicht viel anders zu bedienen. Ein möglicher Nachteil kann sein, dass Debian/Ubuntu-basierte Distributionen dann doch häufiger im Einsatz zu sein scheinen, weswegen man eventuell bei Fehlern oder Konfigurationshilfe die Tipps aus Debianforen nicht unbedingt nutzen kann. <a href="https://fedoraproject.org/labs/jam" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Fedora Jam Lab, offizielle Seite</a>EndeavourOSEndeavourOS ist keine spezielle Distribution für Musikschaffende. Sie ist nicht mal unbedingt für Anfänger geeignet und im Standard wird auch relativ wenig für Musiker mitgegeben. Dennoch habe ich, seit ich Windows vor ca. 2 Monaten den Laufpass gegeben habe, mich für diese Distribution entschieden. Ich stehe zwar vor der Herausforderung, meinen kompletten Workflow wieder zu ändern, da es noch immer keine professionellen Orchester-VSTs für Linux gibt und Musio, was ich wirklich liebe, absolut nicht mit Wine funktioniert. Aber ich will ja gar nicht meckern.EndeavourOS ist eine Distribution, die auf Arch-Linux basiert. Das Ding bei Arch ist, dass es immer extrem aktuelle Pakete gibt, also quasi LIVE die Software, die direkt vom Hersteller irgendwo hochgeladen wirde. Das hat den Vorteil, dass man halt nie mit alter Software arbeitet, es hat aber eben auch den Nachteil, dass die Software vielleicht nicht sauber bei dir funktioniert: EndeavourOS nimmt der Arch-Installation den Schrecken, aber die Chance, dass du dein System unbrauchbar machst, ist wesentlich höher. EndeavourOS richtet sich also definitiv nicht an Anfänger.Ich habe mich trotzdem für diese Distribution entschieden. Ich bin relativ sicher im Umgang mit Linux und ich brauche eine Distribution, die eben auch die neuesten Implementierungen von Wine (für Windows VSTs) und diverse VST-Plugins bietet. Außerdem ist mir ein aktueller Kernel wichtig und ja, ich konfiguriere auch gerne selbst am System herum. Ich mach ja mit dem PC nicht nur Musik, sondern auch zig andere Sachen.FazitMan kann mit jeder Linuxdistribution Musik produzieren. VSTs, CLAP und diverse andere Pluginformate stehen zur Verfügung. Ebenso gibt’s DAWs wie <a href="https://trancefish.de/tag/reaper/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Reaper</a>, Bitwig oder auch Ardour. Du kannst also im Grunde jede Distribution verwenden und dir Software wie Pipewire, Jack, Calf-Plugins und so weiter installieren. (Is anyone using Airwindows plugins? Are they snake oil or are they real?)I also tried C*Spice, which is “not an exciter” but still removing some more of the noise. Which is my actual problem… noisy synthesizers from a live recording. Now the <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Audacity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Audacity</a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Denoise" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Denoise</a> is not too bad, but it subtly eats some of the shiny high end of the material.And by noisy I mean it. Oh yes, that good old 70ties Moog.
