A cool set of ribbons on their own in YIVO's huge RG 123 collection of assorted landsmanshaft and mutual aid society materials.

minimal results on google but it seems to be an old Philadelphia mutual aid society: The First Roumanian Ladies Association Agudath Achiois, which was affiliated with the Federation of Roumanian Jews of Philadelphia.

undated, maybe 1910s-20s?

Welcome to my rabbit hole! The Harper and PP show in #YEG the other night surfaced (in my stomach and brain) the “Barbaric Cultural Practices Tip line” campaign promise. The good news is the smart folks at University of Toronto have been archiving “Canadian Political Parties and Interest Groups” since 2005.

another cool thing that was in the Kolmear collection, though not actually helpful in my research about musicians, were the original application forms to join the organization from ~110 years ago, with occupation and medical history and signatures of members who had sponsored them. of all the landsnmanshaft / mutual aid society collections I've looked at at YIVO, under 10 of the collections had these kinds of intake forms preserved, usually in a mix of English, Yiddish and German.

those relief orgs would often get photos from "back home" where they were sending money for charity or projects. in this one there were a lot from the 1940s either in Kolomyia or a few from Israel where the refugees had been displaced to. in the NY context these relief orgs were especially active in the 1920s post- WWI and Russian Revolution when conditions were quite bad in many Jewish towns, and of course after WWII like these photos, when many of the holocaust survivors returned.

quite typically a few of these landsmanshaftn / geographically organized mutual aid societies would band together to raise money for a cause back home. like here a few of the Kolomea groups in NY (and sometimes Philadelphia, etc) make a relief organization and hold fundraisers to send food or open an orphanage or factory back home.

in this archival box it was missing the inside pages so I couldn't find out much more than what's on the cover.
