Mercury, final prompt for #printerSolstice2425, made me think of #alchemy. It is an element the alchemists favoured & felt was fundamental in their efforts to transmute base into precious metals, both in western & Chinese alchemy (from whence western alchemy emerged).

This is my #linocut portrait of an #alchemist known as Master Geng (before ~975, 耿先生; Gěng Xiānshēng, sometimes Kêng Hsien-shêng). 🧵1/n

Inspired by Song Dynasty Chinese painting this is my linocut portrait of Geng Xiansheng outlined in black on ivory paper, seated at a table with alchemical furnace, vessels cups by a building and bamboo plants covered in snow. She has a flower in her hair and wears a green robe. The vessels are red, and blue. The bamboo is green with black. The roof of the building lintel has a red stripe below a pattern of blue and green.

I just finished writing an article about working with #wildclay terra sigillata that’ll be out in The Studio Potter, March 1. This is one of my favorite examples I shared: Light-green #clay sample from Abiquiu, NM, refined to terra sig, painted on two test tiles, one fired to cone 04 (left) and the other fired to cone 6 (right). The iron in the clay oxidizes and reveals itself as dark red at a lower temp, then melts & vitrifies into a green glaze at a higher temp. #alchemy #experimentation

transition is fundamentally an alchemical working, and i'll die on this hill

*adjusts priestess hat* - think about it:

nigredo (blackening) - the dysphoric dissolution of false self, the death of who you were told or forced to be. breaking down in darkness until nothing remains but pure potential. the void that hungers for authentic form.

albedo (whitening) - the careful purification of essence. HRT as the philosopher's stone, transforming base matter into something sacred. each change a step toward truth. every cell learning to sing a new song written in hormones and starlight.

citrinitas (yellowing) - the solar dawn of authenticity. coming out, claiming space, letting your light burn away shadows. the rebirth into golden possibility. becoming a walking act of rebellion against god's first binary.

rubedo (reddening) - final integration. the blood price paid willingly. surgery as sacred sacrifice, scars as sigils of transformation. becoming fully real. flesh as clay, remolded by will and blade into truth.

we are practicing the darkest arts:
autocannibalism of assigned flesh, voluntary possession by our true selves, necromancy of buried gender. we die a thousand small deaths to birth ourselves anew.

trans friends, we are all practicing magicians, conducting the great work on our own flesh. every injection a ritual, every pill a prayer, every morning mirror check a divination.

the doctors call it "transition"
the witches know it's "transmutation"
the alchemists whisper "opus magnum"
the priests call it "abomination"
we call it "Tuesday" 🖤

break down and rebuild. die and be reborn.
emerge dripping with the blood of your former self.

I’m excited to join #printersolstice - the element themes are a great fit for science stories I want to tell. But I have no time to carve now, so until I can catch up, here’s a the earliest recorded #alchemist for “gold”: Mary the Jewess (aka Maria Hebraea, Miriam, or Maria Prophetissa). She likely lived in 1st century Alexandria. Zosimos of Panopolis (~300 CE) relates that she wrote a treatise called 🧵1/n

My linocut portrait ‘Mary the Jewess, Mother of Alchemy’ with 3 devices attributed to her: the bain-marie (essentially a double boiler, shown as a large round brick furnace complete with orange flames, water bath and vessels), the kerotakis (which allowed one to heat items while collecting vapors, shown as a diagram with tube, with orange flames, below a heated substance, grill and a dome on top) and the tribikos (a kind of alembic with three arms that was used to obtain substances purified by distillation, here like a smaller bain-marie complete with orange flames in furnace, heated vessel and 3 arms to 3 alembics). Mary herself is printed in a gradient of purple to bronze to purple (top to bottom) on ivory paper. She is a Hellenistic Jew, dressed in a draped Classical style dress and wears a veil over her long hair. Her clothing was the frescos of the Dura-Europos synagogue built in Syria in 244 CE.

Alchemy arose in the early European Middle Ages as an alegorical system of knoweldge that took Classical knowledge of chemical and metalurgy and combined it with mystical Christian, Islamic and Pagan knowledge to produce a huge body of texts. Alchemy was primarily concerned with the imortality of the soul.
