@ai6yr @briankrebs OFC this targets #TechIlliterates and the only effective means here are:

  1. Teach #TechLiteracy instead of consumerism.
  2. Mandate #confirmation & #notification - #PopUp|s for every use of #Clipboard (similar to #webcam use by websites)...
  3. Ban #JavaScript - seriously!
  4. Ban #Windows, because it's a #Govware, espechally since #Windows10 and even more so on #Windows11 that is *insecure in every configuration!
  5. Put #TechIlliterates before a system they can't feck up. I.e. @tails_live @tails / #Tails for that reason alone (can't run such commands if they neither got #root nor any #persistent #storage to target).
  6. Normalize the use of @torproject #TorBrowser!
  7. #Teach #tech #literacy instead of #consumerism!
  8. Ban #GAFAMs and their shitty products!
  9. Migrate every #TechIlliterate to #Linux and don't give them administrative privilegues.
  10. Teach tech literacy instead of consumerism!

@bagder Problem with that is (besides occasional bugfixes), most people including myself would see #curl to be functionally complete and anything "nice to have" would be considered not worth the balooning in #complexity and #size.

  • I mean, does curl need to be able to do #BitTorrent (magnet:), #IPFS (ipfs://) or god forbid #blockchain (i.e. #EVM) support?

  • Do you really want to integrate @torproject / #Tor support natively into curl when using #HTTP (localhost:8118) and #SOCKS5 (localhost:9050) #proxy allows for the same and doesn't necessitate having to handle and ingest Tor arguments as well??

In fact if #toybox didn't have a #wget implementation that I could use for OS/1337 I would've merely chosen tiny-curl -o as a global alias or if #tinycurl wasn't an option, curl -o instead.

  • Maybe someone who wants to have said functionality like tor support built-in will go and IDK make i.e. #neocurl or sth. along those lines or build something like #ethcurl or #torcurlor #ipfscurl or whatever...

That being said I am glad curl isn't solely maintained by you but has other contributors (give them a shoutout!) but I also am glad you maintain that vital software that most "#TechIlliterate #Normies" most likely never heard of but propably use on a daily basis as part of all the #tech they use to #consume media with...

  • I consider curl to be "the #vim of downloaders" (tho that's kinda insulting and limiting since curl is more than just a downloader and more intuitive than vim) with wget being "the #vi of downloaders" (tho wget is even simpler to use than vi)...

Either way, curl is awesome...

And no, what #Apple does here isn't #SelfRepair or #RightToRepair but a rotten-to-the-core #Figleaf to bamboozle #TechIlliterate #legislators into believing Corporate #PR aka. #Propaganda #lies!

youtube.com/watch?v=ZzS2vwDUO9

A #PSA for anyone living, staying, entering or even travelling to/from #Australia:

Apparently, #Australia decided to mandate it's #GSM systems to be shutdown because some #GalaxyBrainChair wanted to yeet #2G & #3G and demand everything to use #4G & #5G when in fact #VoLTE support is spotty at best and #EmergencyCalling oftentimes is explicitly hardcoded to not use #WIFIcalling or VoLTE as providing #triangulation and #LocationData via #SS7 is a desired feature when someone calls EMS, Fire Dept or the Police for help...

  • So essentially #tourists and anyone who hasn't an explicitly fully VoLTE-functional device they tested and verified to also do #EmergencyCalls via VoLTE are fecked with no reception when they need it the most!

  • This WILL KILL PEOPLE!!!

As much as we want to bitch about #GSM & #GPRS / #UMTS being #outdated and #inefficient, there are reasons to at least keep 2G available - ranging from lower power consumption to higher resilience in emergency situations.

  • #NewZealand for example does shutdown non-#EmergencyCalls during severe #Earthquakes so that people trapped and/or in need of urgent assistance can get through to dispatch operators and everyone else has to get in line and take a number aka. use #SMS or if existing #Internet to say "I'm fine!"...

  • If the Ozzies really need that juicy #UHF #SubGHz #Spectrum it's totally feasible to instead change the #allocations and reconfigure #CellularNetworks to use lesser bandwith for 2G (i.e. only keeping the absolute mininum of channels available for any service) and thus clear up space...

And to add insult to injury, Australia passed a #NorthKorea|n-alike #CellPhone #ImportBan for any device that doesn't do i.e. the bespoke proprietary garbage that i.e. #Telstra, #Vodafone and #Optus do with the #baseband modems of their #branded devices...

Seriously, which #TechIlliterate dickhead decided it's a good idea to do that #3Gshutdown in Australia without even a basic 2G network up and running at all?

@GrapheneOS I think both apps are shit as *both #Telegram and @signalapp demand #PII in the form of #PhoneNumbers.

OFC Telegram is (by my personal observation) almost exclusively being used by #Scammers and other #TechIlliterate criminals.

@GrapheneOS I think #Apps should not be allowed to request anything to run but what the user allows them to.

  • Apps should not be allowed to require tight integrations and users need to pressure those that make Apps to not do that!

#WhatYouAllowIsWhatWill continue applies to #Enshittification like that of #Uber and this shouldn't exist to begin with...

  • But you'd rightfully point out that with most #TechIlliterates being users, that ship has sailed 20+ years ago as the same boomers that once belittled young millenials to not overshare are now basically "unofficial collaborators" for #NSAbook at this point.

So at this point I'd only see a few options that boil down to few decisions:

  1. Depend on Google making "good hardware" or getting into talks with other vendors to attain the necessary 1st party support from day 0 per design?

  2. Bow before #TechIlliterate|s or double down on "security first" even if that means inconveniencing them?

IDK which answers are "correct", I can merely say what I'd choose but it's not my decision where #GrapheneOS goes...

  • Either way I only wish Graphene OS and the team behind it as well as it's users only the best...

@mook @MastodonEngineering
Well, no because that's why it's explicitly not a duplicate:

  • This should be a setting available to users and not require admin access to the instance, which your suggestion definitely need.

  • Also Mastodon basically doesn't have any good ways to support blocklist feeds like that - which is WHY I opened that issue.

  • If people have to manually export blocklists from their profile and than diff/merge multiple feeds on their own system just to update these and reimport that as a replacement, that's basically a F- in #UI & #UX because that's a shit workflow that I'd expect from a crappy #MSDOS tool and not a modern #WebApplication that already requires #JS just for the UI: If anyone then Mastodon should implement these things in UI in their Software!!!

  • #glitchsoc does have #markdown support and I use it extensively, but this should be a mainline feature and not require a #fork like glitchsoc to begin with.

I do have the sneaking suspicion that with #Mastodon, the way it's maintained is basically @Gargron does: 'I sez so!' and that's it.

  • Again, read the issue again and tell me how the average, #TechIlliterate user can be helped otherwise than how every other Software like #pfBlockerNG does it by exposing a simple UI to configure that and automatically update and merge those...

If any solution to issues with #Mastodon require a user to have privilegued access, 3rd party tools or fiddle with the #CLI I consider it "unfixed" because this shouldn't have to exist to begin with - espechally for the average user!

@cstross some #TechIlliterate even recommended this shit to me instead if a #Laptop when I was in school.
I told them unless it comes with the same #TTS voice as #StevenHawking has I don't want them to ever be allowed to make any technical decision or suggestion in their life!
Those things are like #TexasInstruments #calculators: an absolute #ripoff given even the shittiest #Netbook with the abundant #Intel #Z3735F #SoC running #OS1337 is more versatile.
And I literally just started that distro.

@anarchopunk_girl *nodds in agreement*

#Cyberfacism being welded as a weapon doesn't make it less bad and inacceptable.

In fact the problem are literally #TechIlliterate #parents to the point that I've told people 20 years ago to not give their parents any admin rights because they'll fuck up everything and activate or install some "Youth Protection" BS and fuck up everything!

Even I who acts as #BenevolentDictator in IT will go out of my way to never breach a users' privacy, minor nor adult!

The fact that people that #TechIlliterate are allowed to be #Judges and made-believe that using #Tor is basically only needed to do illicit activities...

WTF #France?
youtu.be/cyFL7KJGcC0?t=154

If this #precedent doesn't get the #Judge forcibly retried and the people freed and compensated, then I guess #France is a #NoGoArea for anyone who actually cares about their #HumanRights like #Privacy and #PresumptionOfInnocence as well as #RightToRemainSilent!
