"Why the Biggest Battery Company is Betting Against Lithium" [14:32 min]
by Undecided with Matt Ferrell

Quote by UwMF:
"Apr 8, 2025
Why the Biggest Battery Company is Betting Against Lithium. Sodium-ion battery technology isn’t exactly new, but something interesting is happening. CATL, the world’s biggest lithium battery manufacturer, says that up to half the market could switch to sodium. That’s right—the biggest name in lithium batteries is betting against lithium. Looks like lithium might need to recharge its reputation. After all, sodium-ion batteries are nearly as good lithium, and salt is much cheaper and easier to access than lithium. So maybe its not surprising that CATL and some other companies are getting ready to manufacture huge numbers of them in preparation for what could be a massive market shift. But is sodium really the future of energy storage, or is it just another battery technology destined to live in lithium-ion's shadow?"

ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Coral reefs are known as “the rainforests of the sea”. These vibrantly complex ecosystems harbour the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem globally. An estimated 25% of all marine species depend on reefs. They are also crucial for millions of people, providing food, livelihoods, resources and coastal protection.
Major threats, such as over-exploitation and climate change, are jeopardising the future of coral reefs. In the last few decades, sharp declines in reef cover have occurred worldwide. This is our first coral reef project to restore damaged reefs in the northern waters of Nusa Penida, Indonesia.
Our long-term goal is to improve resilience by enhancing connectivity of fragmented reefs whilst protecting and preserving endangered coral species. Led by our local team of expert divers and marine biologists passionate about the preservation of this marine ecosystem, we work with local people to promote positive community involvement in coral reef restoration.

"Nov 15, 2024
The Mediterranean Sea is in crisis. Once a thriving spot for biodiversity, it is now the most overfished sea in the world and, according to the WWF, is "on the verge of burnout."
Why? Bottom trawling—a destructive fishing method where nets are dragged along the seabed, catching or destroying everything in their path.
For our 21st Planet Wild mission, we're supporting a beautiful and effective method to stop bottom trawling and protect marine life: an underwater sculpture museum.
Many thanks to the five selected artists who donated their work to the museum: Nikolas Maniatakos, Maria Grazia Collini, Abdulkadir Hocaoglu, Stefano Corti, and Giacomo Bernardi.

"Mar 19, 2025
Once farmland protected by flood defenses, Steart Marshes in southwest England now thrives as a restored salt marsh. As the defences weakened, the land became increasingly vulnerable to flooding. Instead of rebuilding defenses, conservationists, the government and local communities made a bold choice to let the sea reclaim the landscape. Just over 10 years ago the sea wall was breached, allowing the sea to take over the land, transforming the area into a vital wetland habitat.
Salt marshes, which have declined by 85% in the U.K. since the 19th century, play a crucial role in coastal ecosystems. They provide shelter for wetland wildlife, act as natural flood defenses by absorbing storm surges, stabilize coastlines against erosion, and store carbon to help combat climate change. Managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Steart Marshes now provides a model for future restoration projects, proving that working with nature can protect communities while rebuilding lost habitats."

After 3 years of expeditions and breeding programs we are now finally releasing 4 critically endangered species of snail back into the wild!
🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Four species of snail thought to be extinct have been found on a small Atlantic island. After more than 100 years without a confirmed observation, the species were rediscovered on Deserta Grande by the local conservationists at IFCN. Their only home and habitat had been devastated by invasive species so their reappearance comes as a very pleasant surprise. However, initial estimates of their numbers (less than 50) suggest they may be on the verge of extinction. For this project, we have joined a hopeful rescue operation led by the IFCN that aims to ensure the long term survival of these species."

"This ancient bit of ingenuity keeps carbon trapped for thousands of years"
by Matt Simon for Grist [Mar 03, 2025] [Audio available]

grist.org/science/ancient-carb

Quotes:
"Turning plant waste into biochar captures loads of carbon. New research suggests it stays trapped for much longer than scientists thought."

"For all its plant and animal life aboveground, the Amazon rainforest’s soils are surprisingly poor in nutrients necessary for growing food. Thousands of years ago, the region’s Indigenous peoples solved this problem by creating “terra preta” from table scraps and charcoal and tucking it away in the hostile soil."

"As biomass like trees and crops grow, they sequester carbon in their leaves and branches. Heat that biomass up without fully consuming it and it turns to nearly pure carbon known as biochar,"

"The nagging question, though, is exactly how long that carbon stays in the soil. A new study adds to a growing body of evidence that scientists have been underestimating the staying power of biochar, meaning the technology is actually an even more powerful way to store carbon than previously thought."

"Nailing down exactly how long biochar can hold onto carbon is crucial for the carbon-removal credit industry, where companies like Microsoft and Google fund projects to draw carbon out of the atmosphere."

"Much as humans eat food off dishes instead of eating the dishes themselves, bacteria and fungi choose to eat organic matter like leaves over biochar. “It’s kind of like if you have a nice piece of cake and they bring it to us on a plate, we’re going to eat the cake,” Sanei said. “If we are very hungry, we eat it much faster. But still, we’re not going to eat the plate.”

What can we learn ?
Besides being scared, envious, jaelous or worse.

China is investing with predicted losses...
until you put a price on sufficating.
True: China is the largest CO2 polluter of the planet. [by just a small margin 'winning' from the US]
But: Unlike the Capitalist counterpart the US, China is changing their habits.
Unlike the US, China is dominating all kinds of research.
Unlike the US, China is making the big leap. Whereas the US only makes small steps forward and often back again. This makes the changes obvious and huge.

China is doing something that doesn’t seem to make sense. It’s building more coal power plants than any other country, yet at the same time, it’s installing as much solar, wind, and nuclear capacity as the rest of the world combined. Its CO2-emitting blast furnaces produce more steel than the next ten countries combined, but it's also rolling out 6,000 electric vehicles every single day.
So, what’s really going on? Is China leading the clean energy transition, or is it locking in decades more fossil fuels? The answer is both—and at a scale no other country can match. But why? And what does this mean for the rest of the world?

"The future of Gaza’s recovery may rely on solar power"
by Saqib Rahim for Grist [Mar 14, 2025] [Audio available]

grist.org/energy/the-future-of

Quotes:
"Facing destroyed infrastructure and limited control of energy supplies, off-grid options like solar are helping Palestinians rebuild."

"Growing up, Mashharawi had been accustomed to life with inconsistent power — as little as three hours a day. “It’s not easy to describe unless you live it,” she said. “Your life is completely messed up. Everything is controlled by others. Your life is controlled by when power is on and off.”

"But in fact, the two parties’ dysfunctional relationship around energy has a long history. .. a land and sea blockade. This included electricity: Israel came to control 10 power lines running into Gaza, as well as the diesel fuel needed to run its one power plant."

"Israel’s security establishment thought this hammerlock over Gazan energy meant leverage over Hamas, said Elai Rettig, a lecturer in energy politics at Bar-Ilan University. As for Hamas, many Gazans felt the group was more interested in its crusade against Israel than addressing public works.
For the people of Gaza, the conflict meant energy poverty...who had to jam all their chores into these fleeting windows of opportunity."

"Gaza’s energy dependence wasn’t cheap. Years of Palestinian counterparties failing to pay Gaza’s power bill — for financial and political reasons — had by 2023 racked up a debt to Israel of 2 billion shekels, about $500 million."

"Satellite imagery soon showed solar arrays sprouting on thousands of buildings across the Gaza Strip, especially in crowded areas like refugee camps.
It occurred to her that unreliable power was not just a burden in households, like the one she grew up in. Thousands of businesses across Gaza — restaurants, workshops, bakeries — yearned for a source of energy more reliable than what they had. Mashharawi decided to get into the energy business. She started Sunbox,.. [Mashharawi JdeB]"

"...working doggedly with Israeli authorities to get the equipment approved../\..She soon helped supply bigger projects. Sunbox equipped 20 small desalination plants, the engines of Gazan water production, with solar. It set up solar-charged streetlights so girls could feel more confident walking to school in the wee hours."

"It was a renewable revolution born of political dysfunction. The total number of solar arrays in the Gaza Strip vaulted from about a dozen in 2012 to 8,760 in 2019, mostly in the form of small rooftop systems. The extraordinary growth made the Occupied Palestinian Territories one of the fastest-growing renewable energy markets in the world.
By 2023, solar represented 25-40 percent of daytime power generation on the ragged Gazan grid, Rettig, of Bar-Ilan University, estimated."

Denyibg the Climate doesn't make it disappear.

"Farmers depend on climate data. They’re suing the USDA for deleting it."
by Frida Garza for Grist [Feb 28, 2025] {Audio available]

grist.org/food-and-agriculture

Quotes:
"Growing food is a precarious business, and losing access to key information makes it worse."

"In late January, the director of digital communications at the U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA} sent an email to staff instructing them to remove agency web pages related to climate change by the end of the following day."

"The result is that an unknown number of web pages — including some that contained information about federal loans and other forms of assistance for farmers and some that showcased interactive climate data — have been taken down"

“Farmers are on the front lines of climate change,” said Jeff Stein, an associate attorney with the environmental nonprofit Earthjustice, who is representing the plaintiffs. “Purging climate change web pages doesn’t make climate change go away. It just makes it harder for farmers to adapt.”

"One of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit is the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York, or NOFA-NY, a group that helps educate and certify producers in organic farming practices."

“All of a sudden, it’s like anything marked with climate is starting to disappear,” said Wes Gillingham, [NOFA-NY]. According to the complaint, the Farm Service Agency and Farmers.gov, both part of the USDA, removed information about how farmers could access federal loans and technical assistance to start adopting practices that help reduce emissions and sequester carbon, known as climate-smart agriculture."

"The speed with which websites were taken down encouraged NOFA-NY to move quickly when it came to filing a lawsuit. “We want to prevent good science and information that farmers need from disappearing, especially this time of year,"
He emphasized that access to scientific information about drought, extreme weather, and other climate impacts is essential to farmers’ ability to stay in business. “Farmers are constantly trying to improve their situation. They’re under immense economic pressure,” he said. ”

"When tools like this go offline, they disrupt farmers’ ability to protect their lands and their livelihoods. In New York, where Gillingham’s group is located, the majority of farms are small: under 200 acres. “The margin of error to be successful, it’s pretty slim already,” said Gillingham."

"In its complaint, filed Monday, Earthjustice referred to emails sent on January 30 by Rhee, the director of digital communications at USDA, instructing staff to remove web pages. These emails were obtained by multiple news outlets last month.
To date, neither Rhee nor the Department of Agriculture has publicly acknowledged the emails or the removal of climate-related web pages. “That’s problematic for a number of reasons, including that we don’t know the full scope of the purge,” said Stein."

"Larry Moore, a spokesperson for the USDA, said the agency is working with the Department of Justice, or DOJ, on court filings, and directed inquiries to the DOJ. The DOJ did not respond..."

"In addition to NOFA-NY, the other plaintiffs in the complaint are the National Resources Defense Council and the Environmental Working Group, an activist group focused on toxic pollution."

"A hearing date is still pending. Rylander argued it’s likely that more complaints will be filed over the removal of climate information from other federal agency websites, like the Environmental Protection Agency."

"Gillingham referred to these moves as part of “an indiscriminate political agenda scrubbing climate” from any government website. “We can’t sit by and just wait to see what happens. You know, they should not be doing what they’re doing. So it has to stop. And the courts are the only option right now.”
