Guerric HachéThis strange critter is Boreus brumalis, also known as a snow scorpionfly. As adults they spend much of their time directly on the snow, and are well-adapted to the cold; apparently they can't survive being held in a human hand because it's too warm.<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/insect?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#insect</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/scorpionfly?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#scorpionfly</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/snowscorpionfly?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#snowscorpionfly</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/boreus?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#boreus</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/macro?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#macro</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/macrophotography?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#macrophotography</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/wildlife?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wildlife</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/wildlifephotography?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wildlifephotography</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/ontario?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ontario</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/canada?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#canada</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/snow?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#snow</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/winter?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#winter</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/inaturalist?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#inaturalist</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/arthropod?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#arthropod</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/invertebrates?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#invertebrates</a>
sohkamyung<p>Back from a holiday in Italy. And one of the more interesting organisms spotted is this Scorpionfly, genus Panorpa, in Florence on 14 October 2024. A fascinating looking insect.</p><p>On iNaturalist [ <a href="https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/248703588" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">inaturalist.org/observations/2</span><span class="invisible">48703588</span></a> ].</p><p><a href="https://photog.social/tags/iNaturalist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iNaturalist</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nature</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photography</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Florence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Florence</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Italy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Italy</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Insects</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Scorpionfly" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Scorpionfly</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Mecoptera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mecoptera</span></a></p>
LionelB<p>I saw this rather beautiful insect this morning. Several species are quite similar but this looks to me to be a German Scorpionfly (Panorpa germanicus). </p><p><a href="https://expressional.social/tags/scorpionfly" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>scorpionfly</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insects</span></a></p>
Nature with Steve<p>A <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Scorpionfly" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Scorpionfly</span></a> is a scary-looking <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/insect" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insect</span></a>, thanks to that long, mandible-bearing 'beak' or rostrum—and of course the male's tail, which inspired the name given to these creatures. The 'stinger' is in fact a genital capsule or bulb, bearing two 'pincers' (gonostyli); it's used for mating, and for defaecation (pic 3). Females (pic 4) lack this bulb. Feeding mostly on other <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insects</span></a>, usually dead ones, these <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/minibeasts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>minibeasts</span></a> are harmless to us Humans.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Wildlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wildlife</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nature</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NaturePhotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NaturePhotography</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/InsectWeek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InsectWeek</span></a></p>
