Leaded Solder · Getting Kermit onto the MBC-555My Sanyo MBC-555 has been a good little computer, but it’s not especially useful. I haven’t been able to get software onto its strange disk format, and the software I do get can’t be run under DOS 1.25. If I want to test out a prototype serial card, I need to get Kermit onto the computer, and the best way to do that is to be able to write it to some disks.

Old Phone Preservation

Lots of new discoveries and dumps have been made since the last post, so much so that I couldn't possibly fit onto one post!

Thanks to wavvy01, the following phones are now dumped and have firmwares available on the Dumbphone Repo: LG: * LG6200 (CX62BE09) * LG10000 (CX10BL06) Samsung: * SCH-R561 Vice (CD27, CI15, both Bell branded) * SCH-U740 Alias (AH31, Bell branded) * SPH-A740 (YG19, Bell branded) * SPH-M510 (AJ01, unbranded) These were all dumped from devices on Canadian CDMA carriers, which tended to have different firmwares compared to their US equivalents. This is still ongoing, but Clonelocker has also sent some devices over. So far these have been dumped: Samsung: * SGH-Z630B (Z630BAIKF4) * SPH-A880 (YJ05, Qwest branded) * UTStarcom: ** CDM-8955 (D0335AUP02_4.182) These 3 phones barely scratch the surface of what was sent over, but are still very significant nonetheless! The SGH-Z630B is a special version of the Z630 on TIM Italy that includes support for Qualcomm's BREW runtime. Fellow BREW enthusiast Kraze was able to write the firmware image from Clonelocker's Z630B to a bog standard Z630 - enabling BREW support on a GSM phone! Check out @krzbrew on twitter if you haven't already. While previously thought to be undumpable due to the lack of any obvious JTAG test points, the UTStarcom CDM-8955 had them hidden in plain sight on the phone's TTA-24 data connector, and its firmware image is available for anyone to download. This specific model would go on to be rebadged as the "Nokia 6315i", meaning it too should be dumpable!
Fellow ROMphonix team meber gtrxac has been working on a project they've dubbed "predefrepo" as a one-stop-shop for one's Nokia S40 preloaded needs. They've written scripts to automatically unpack various Nokia Series 40 firmware images to rip themes, games, applications, and so on. You can find predefrepo on the Dumbphone Repo! It already is a very impressive collection.
As noted in a previous post, Sanyo phones are slowly but surely having their JTAG pinouts documented online. One such phone is the Sanyo Mirro, and its four wallpapers are present here. Wallpaper 1 - long exposure shot of the Arc de Triomphe. The photo is credited to "GYRO PHOTOGRAPHY" on amanaimages. Wallpaper 2 - Photograph of the moon during the Waning Gibbous phase. Wallpaper 3 - A photograph of Tokyo at night, lit by the seemingly infinite number of buildings in the distance. The amanaimages page has it titled as "Tokyo night view", credited to "SOURCENEXT CORPORATION". Wallpaper 4 - Bokeh photo of various colored lights. It was once available on MediaBakery as "Blurred light".
The Legacy Portable Computing wiki (most commonly referred to as LPCwiki) has recently broke 1,000 edits! This is such an awesome milestone to see and we couldn't have possibly done it ourselves. Thank you to all of the editors and maintainers of the wiki (especially gtrxac - LPCwiki would not be in the state it is today if it wasn't for you)!
