mk30
Does anyone have suggestions for a wooden cutting board that won't grow moldy? I have an outdoor kitchen in a tropical wet climate and every wooden board I've ever used becomes a mold palace pretty quickly.

I use a plastic board now, but I want to eat fewer micro plastics. So if anyone has suggestions (maybe for a particular kind of wood to look for?), I'd be most grateful.

#offgrid #homestead #cooking #food #hawaii #tropical

diana 🏳️‍⚧️🦋🌱
These are the solar panels I set on the ground three years ago. They have kept my house toasty warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They keep a pair of rack mounted batteries charged, which acts like a premium 10KWh UPS. They keep the lights on, even during the worst storms that knock out the grid. Also, my utility bills are zero as these are all under my control.

I'm showing you this, because solar can be easy to install and does not require it to be connected to the existing house wiring. At minimum, four panels and an inverter powering a window air conditioner. More panels are nice for when heat is needed in the winter. And of course, charging the EV.

#offgrid #tinyhouse

Stevan
There's a job I have been successfully postponing for some months done. I decided to install a pair of 400w panels on the #offgrid battery shed, thinking we'd catch some light reflecting off clouds. In fact, it was a daft idea, and the panels never put out anywhere near their rated power.
So I exchanged the old pair of 190w panels for the 2x 400s, bodging securing it as my plan A worked out in the small hours of the night didn't work. Already we saw near-rated output today.
2/...

Mx. Luna Corbden
I'm actually finding a lot of 3D printed solutions to things. I also got 3D printed shelves for my old RV fridge on eBay, since the originals are hard to find.

I'm getting a 3D printed siphon attachment for a hose as well. Moving water from one place to another can be a bigger problem than you'd think.

#RVLife #OffGrid

Mx. Luna Corbden
Note: Urine isn't all that bad. It doesn't have dangerous bacteria and all that. We don't need to be all that afraid of it, especially when it's not transformed into sewage.

They make special toilet seats for 5-Gal buckets. I line that with a heavy-duty plastic bag (13gal is the best I can find, but 9gal might be better), with a layer of pellets on the bottom. Whenever you go, toss in some more pellets. Sprinkle a little baking soda over the nasty bits if it smells. Then every 3 days, I swap bags, putting the used bag inside a grocery bag for double-protec, and they go to the dump. (We don't have trash service, either.) If there's liquid in the bottom, use more pellets next time.

Longer term I want to install a urine diverter on the bucket (I bought a 3D printed one on Etsy for this purpose), going to a jug, so I can just dump the pee outside, which will reduce pellet and plastic waste a great deal, and then I'm almost there in terms of making a it composting toilet. (People say laundry detergent jugs are the best, because they're opaque and no one knows what you're carrying, say if you live on a campsite.)

Even longer term, I could do what I saw on one YouTube video, which is to have the urine diverted outside to a French drain (a pit refilled with layers of gravel and sand), to reduce effort even further. And then of course that coveted composting system for the rest. Still gotta figure that out.

One more thing on human bucket: For TP, keep a special bag for throwing away pee TP. Poo TP goes into the bucket.

I hardly miss having a real toilet and it isn't nearly as much trouble as I thought it would be.

/🧵

#RVLife #OffGrid

Mx. Luna Corbden
I'm very briefly going to sing the praises of wood pellets as a cat litter, and if you don't have running water, as your own litter.

There's a lot of details to cover here, but I'm going to gloss over this for now.

They sell these pellets as "animal bedding," or I'm pretty sure wood heating pellets are basically the same thing. They run $5-7 a 40lb bag, and you can get them at feed and tractor type stores. Up here in Idaho, even the grocery carries these.

The big secret is that "sewage" is only created when urine and poo mix. That's where the horrible smells and worst of the dangerous toxicity come from. The pellets help deal with that with low effort, though it's not 100%.

Basically for cat litter, there's a kind of pellet litter box that comes with stone pellets (I forget the brand, but Chewy carries them), and has a grid of holes in the bottom through which the urine falls. You're supposed to replace the stone pellets once a month but I do not do that. Because I've mixed the stone pellets with the wood. The wood pellets are just compressed sawdust, so when wet, it turns back to sawdust and falls through the grid holes. A puppy pad goes under that (I'm still trying to engineer something that doesn't use plastic, but this is still better waste-wise than litter). And I scoop the poop as usual, but it's not encrusted with litter and very few pellets get tossed. Just change the puppy pad with its wet sawdust once a week and you're good. Sometimes the fresh poo smells worse than with litter, but that ends quickly and the overall longterm smell is way better.

More on human use next twoot.

🧵

#RVLife #OffGrid

mk30
Ahh, a nice pile of pre-mulch (category: pallet). This pile isn't the final pile. It's the holding pile. Next step is distributing the pieces based on where i'd like them to decompose.

Stuff like managed decomposition really makes me feel like I've got my arm up to the elbow in the circle of life, swishing things around and trying to make something happen lol.

And yes, all my most profound ecological insights come only when I'm *at least* elbow deep in the circle of life.

Which reminds me, I have some goat poop (from @saltphoenix 🥰) compost tea brewing in a bucket and I gotta stir it and distribute it.
