David O'Brien<p>Wee surprise while out gardening earlier. Was clearing some weeds from our raised beds before planting, when I realised I had acquired a pedunculate oak seedling.</p><p>While it would be lovely to have an <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/oak" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oak</span></a> in the garden, I really don't want a <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/tree" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tree</span></a> that can grow to 40m tall with a 10m girth that close to my house. So I popped it in a little pot, for now.</p><p>Thinking I might pot it on for a few years then find a spot in some woodland up the river to plant it out when it's established.</p>

Bill Gallagher Photography<p>Solitaire</p><p>This was captured in February during the middle of winter.<br>Camped in Yosemite Valley a snow storm moved through the valley dumping about 8 inches of snow.<br>As I made my way through the village in the morning I saw this fabulous snow covered oak tree and decided it would make a good subject for a photo. Cellon. The oak's circumference is 30 feet, it is 85 feet tall and its crown spread is 160 feet."</p><p>It has an 80 foot horizontal "spider" trunk that lays on the ground creating a natural pergola. There's even a picnic table amidst the branches! (not shown) In the past dozen years or so this amazing limb was cracked (over my shoulder to the left in photo) and is now supported by large poles. Friends of Wollaton Park<p>For a long time this Oak it lived in the shadow of the big Beech tree. You can see how its left branch grew outwards, reaching desperately for sunlight.
