I will believe that a company that offers software they exclusively control under the AGPLv3 license truly embraces the Open Source Community when they accept a contribution under AGPLv3 from me and meet all of the obligations of the license for network-based services they offer that uses my contribution.

Future of OSL in Jeopardy
by Lance Albertson on Wed, Apr 30 2025

".. critical and time-sensitive situation facing the Open Source Lab. Over the past several years, we have been operating at a deficit due to a decline in corporate donations.
.. recent changes in university funding have led to a significant reduction in CoE’s budget. As a result, our current funding model is no longer sustainable and CoE needs to find ways to cut programs

"...why when #opensource or #foss or #oss projects try to do something like this then everybody turns into knots to discourage you that it's wrong, impossible or doesn't fulfill OSI or the #fsf principles or whatever..."

Because the 'F' in FOSS stands for 'Free(dom)', and they're effectively removing people's freedom with these restrictions.

If a project wants to be FOSS, they can't do this. If they want to do this, they can't be FOSS. IMO.

The mobygratis.com/ website says this when you want to use thier music:

"there are only 2 things you can't do with the music here; use it to advertise right wing politics or causes, or use it to promote meat, dairy, or other animal products."

Sounds easy and cool, but then why when #opensource or #foss or #oss projects try to do something like this then everybody turns into knots to discourage you that it's wrong, impossible or doesn't fulfill OSI or the #fsf principles or whatever...

🎭 NATS: When Your Digital Child Becomes the Prize in a Custody Battle

Reminder to all companies:
If you build your empire on open-source and contribute nothing back, don't be surprised when the ground starts cracking.

NATS, one of the few messaging systems that actually works without summoning ancient demons, now finds itself torn between its creators at Synadia and its adoptive guardians at CNCF. Like any good custody battle, it’s about one thing: Money. 🤑

As a tiny contributor to NATS, it fills me with childlike glee and existential dread to witness what happens when open source ideals collide headfirst with cold, hard business reality.
It’s a classic story:
A vendor generously donates an open-source jewel… only to demand it back when the math stops adding up.

Synadia, the ever-devoted parent, wants to put NATS under the Business Source License (BSL) to secure its survival. Meanwhile, CNCF holds the project in a loving but legally fortified embrace, refusing to let go.

CNCF, clutching its righteous torch of community ownership, refuses to hand over the toys, reminding Synadia: “You gave it away. There are rules. Also… you signed things.”

As a microscopic speck in this universe of giants, I have one simple emotion: sadness.
Sadness that the best technology can still be crushed under the weight of human greed, misaligned incentives, and tragic irony.

OSS survives because we believe in it. OSS dies when we monetize belief.

Whatever happens, little NATS deserves better than a lawsuit. It deserves a future.

Will I stop contributing to NATS?
No. I'm far too stubborn for that.
Will I trust it the same way?
Ask me again when the lawsuits stop.

⚡ Still contributing. Still dreaming. Still worried.

> The wasmCloud core team—and our leading contributors, including Cosmonic—are steadfastly committed to open source, to the needs of our community, to the core tenants of software foundation membership, and to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). We are proud to license wasmCloud under Apache 2.0 and do not believe the Business Source License (BUSL) is open source in practice or philosophy.

I’m toying with this idea of “personality driven software development” — software that is largely shaped by the personality, humanity, trauma, quirks, interests of the (usually single) main author of it. I think there is quite a bit of software like this, often in the #oss space, a lot by #indiedevelopers and #indiegames of course.

Help wanted ! #OpenSource #OSS

A few years back, I made a fine little #python script to help automate shell commands and scripts over a range of dates, in parallel.

The script is called loop_wrapper and is on github: github.com/metno/loop_wrapper

Although it is not developed actively, it is very much in use here, and I'd like it very much if someone could help maintain it.

First, it would be great with help with CI/CD, and also pip- and conda-installation.

Do you know how to do this (or want to learn on the spot?) Have some spare time? Get in touch here: github.com/metno/loop_wrapper/
