I heard Annihilation was about grief or relationships. I'm interested af in Scavenger's Reign.

I feel like we have a rough indentation / substructure of how we will process things from birth, but that every event thereon will shape it further.

As well, we know ourselves in reference to others: "I'm like A, not like B, but most like C. What lies beyond C? I might see myself reflected best over there."

Very interesting preprint from Jurgen Klingauf and colleagues demonstrating that synaptic vesicle retrieval is clathrin-mediated.

The debate over the mechanism has been going since the 1970s. In recent years, ultra-fast endocytosis has become accepted. In this paper it's argued that if you look at retrieval of cargo, rather than membrane, then it is mainly driven by clathrin.

Recently, an ultrastructural study on synaptic membrane retrieval following synaptic vesicle fusion revealed an ultrafast mechanism of endocytosis in mouse hippocampal synapses at physiological temperature. Using live cell imaging of single-vesicle exo- and endocytosis in mouse hippocampal synapses, combined with accelerated optogenetic acidification of synaptic vesicles, we found that compensatory endocytosis occurs mostly through a slow clathrin-dependent and actin-independent mode at both room and physiological temperatures. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

Sometimes one stops to just look at the data. And the software user interface. They are beautiful.

We are looking at a cross section of the #Drosophila larval brain, near the brain commissure, where hundreds of neurons (magenta: their reconstructed skeletons) cross from one brain hemisphere to the other. To the right, a 3D rendering of multiple neurons, a pair of which cross the midline in a U-shaped bend.

Our CATMAID software is web-based, in other words it's just a website that accesses remote data. I credit it's sleek design to @herrsaalfeld – author of the early, "Ice Age" CATMAID and its blue tones – who at some point in his life studied "medieninformatik" and has always had a penchant for art.

bioRxiv · Working memory readout varies with frontal theta rhythmsIncreasing evidence suggests that attention varies rhythmically, phase-locked to ongoing cortical oscillations. Here, we report that the phase of theta oscillations (3 to 6 Hz) in the frontal eye field (FEF) is associated with temporal and spatial variation of the read-out of information from working memory (WM). Non-human primates were briefly shown a sample array of colored squares. A short time later, they viewed a test array and were rewarded for identifying which square changed color (the target). Better performance (accuracy and reaction time) varied systematically with the phase of local field potential (LFP) theta at the time of test array onset as well as the target location. This is consistent with theta scanning across the FEF and thus visual space from top to bottom. Theta was coupled, on opposing phases, to both spiking and beta (12 to 20 Hz). These results could be explained by a wave of activity that moves across the FEF, modulating the readout of information from WM. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

I cannot convey how much I resonated with the latest Change, Technically episode on math anxiety! I was homeschooled, my wife is defending her Ph.D. thesis tomorrow (!), we have both seen many of the patterns of math anxiety you talk about... I was just nodding (and sometimes smh along with you) the whole time. It's so hard and complex and I love that you embrace that.
