Originally called Saint George's Place, Nelson Mandela Place was re-named by Glasgow City Council in the early 1980s as part of their support for the then-imprisoned South African Anti-Apartheid campaigner. This street was chosen for the honour because at the time it was home to the South African Consulate in the city, meaning they'd have to use the name of someone the South African government of the time viewed as an enemy of the state in their address.
The former Glasgow Stock Exchange on Nelson Mandela Place in Glasgow. Built in the 1870s, it was designed by John Burnet in a Venetian Gothic style, with later additions by his son John James Burnet.
