#ScribesAndMakers 13. March: Shameless self-promotion day

Besides all my Open Source work (and the very occasional very tiny fanfiction attempt) I publish Free Sheet Music in digital editions, beautifully renderer as PDF, but also available as MusicXML and MIDI for conversion to Braille music notation as needed.

Voices from the choir et al.:

  • "finally, legible tenor notes!" (everyone with bass clef allergy)
  • "it’s easier on the eyes due to the larger size" (older ladies in choir)
  • easy to transpose (few clicks)
  • simple enough to make extra versions for the conductor and accompanist (closed score (two systems only, like for piano) with text below, so the pianist can follow the regie instructions)

https://mbsd.evolvis.org/music/free contains my Free Sheet Music contributions mostly from Public Domain scans (some more recent ones were made under permission from the composer/arranger); I also produced https://mbsd.evolvis.org/music/misc/ and dozens of pieces I cannot show because they are licenced works.

I do this for myself and share with the world, but I could imagine digitally engraving some sheet music for YOU for a small donation or something. (My speciality is vocal scores, but I can do piano accompaniment mostly, might need help with optimal distribution of notes to hands. Or just type in from a pre-existing score. I do need pitches, no aural transcriptions.)

u.a. über #MuseScore #Audacity #ChordLooper #Ardour #LilyPond #Nootka u.v.m.
oder auch über #StudioOne : gnulinux.ch/studio-one-6-5-jet…

re: #OMR (#OCR for music scores) ---

I played around with #Audiveris a bit tonight and successfully imported a few different formats (pdf and jpg) and exported to mxl, which can be read by Musescore.

It actually looks like #MuseScore is testing an import pdf feature, which also transcribes to an editable format, but the file has to be uploaded to their online platform, processed, then downloaded.

But they are using Audiveris behind the scenes...

PAHAHAHA
#MuseScore decided it was going to not let me open it in Wayland after the first time again, so running it in X-Wayland.
now the audio's desynchronised from real-time, it's synced to cpu-time.

So depending on what buffering and rate I set it to it goes slow & low or fast & high, sounds ridiculous ^.^

Unfortunately unusable.
Guess I will just have to down-grade.

Downgraded #MuseScore back to 4.3… the version without Wayland support.
Graphically, having Wayland is very nice.
but for some reason it made audio befunked, gotta go into settings and crank up the buffer & rates or it's stuttery hell.
not a big deal.

The big deal is MuseScore is now refusing to open with an error message described by a dev as a "red herring".

It opened once on the latest update, worked fine!
Every time after that it flashes for a second and crashes!
and it appears to affect all 4.4.* versions, I just can't launch them now!

Opened the MuseScore.com app today after a couple of months, and wow, it's become so predatory.

New practice mode! Let's configure it together! Almost done - just pay us now. And the option to close that dialog only appears after seeing the subscription plan costs.

Quick, renew your subscription before it ends! Do it now!
So I check, and my subscription ends in 6 months. Somehow, I don't think I'll renew it.

Updated #MuseScore forgetting about the bug that was introduced where audio is really slow and stuttery… it's still not fixed.

However, turns out bumping the buffer size up from 1024 to 4096 fixes it, still not perfect but it's fine.

Upping the sample rate doesn't make a massive difference to my ears, although it makes a visual difference, smoother play head… weird.

From Marc Sabatella of outsideshore.com :
"In other news: the music notation software Finale - for many years the leading program of its kind (and what I used for many years before MuseScore) - is being discontinued. The company that produces the software is not going out of business, but they are going to focus on their other products and cease developing and selling Finale. .... I am hoping to be able to help former Finale users find a new home here!"
