Mojo ♻️<p>Big news for homebuyers! Labor is set to ban foreign investors from buying existing homes for at least two years, mirroring a previous Coalition policy. This means less competition from overseas buyers and a better chance for locals to secure their dream home! But wait… why only 2 years? 🤔 Is this a short-term fix or the start of a bigger change? Let’s hope it’s the latter! 💭 <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HousingMarket" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HousingMarket</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HomeBuyers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeBuyers</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/LaborPolicy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborPolicy</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HousingCrisis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HousingCrisis</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Auspol</span></a><br> <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/feb/16/labor-to-ban-overseas-buyers-from-buying-existing-homes-for-at-least-two-years-replicating-coalition-policy#:~:text=Foreign%20investors%20are%20currently%20barred,a%20third%20were%20existing%20dwellings" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theguardian.com/australia-news</span><span class="invisible">/2025/feb/16/labor-to-ban-overseas-buyers-from-buying-existing-homes-for-at-least-two-years-replicating-coalition-policy#:~:text=Foreign%20investors%20are%20currently%20barred,a%20third%20were%20existing%20dwellings</span></a>.</p>
RaymondPierreL3<p>For all the heated to-and-for in the discussions around our <a href="https://aus.social/tags/housingcrisis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>housingcrisis</span></a> there needs to be some factual content to clarify the problem. Prof Steven Hamilton currently visiting fellow at the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute at the ANU injects a major fact into the discussion:</p><p>"I am yet to meet a single credible economist who disagrees about the primary cause of our housing emergency. And that’s the role of local governments in restricting land use.</p><p>Whether it be height restrictions on new developments, heritage listings, or even just basic permitting for building or modifying an existing building, Australia’s local governments are a malignant cancer that riddles our housing market.</p><p>Reams of high-quality evidence from across the world are crystal clear that these local government regulations are the prime cause of limited supply, resulting high prices, and the flow-on effects on people’s welfare. Everywhere that these restrictions have been loosened, supply has expanded and prices have fallen."</p><p>Source: Crickey News<br><a href="https://www.crikey.com.au/2024/09/27/greens-housing-plan-friday-fight-yes/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">crikey.com.au/2024/09/27/green</span><span class="invisible">s-housing-plan-friday-fight-yes/</span></a></p><p>Read Also:<br><a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jue.2023.103555" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">doi.org/10.1016/j.jue.2023.103</span><span class="invisible">555</span></a></p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/HousingPolicy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HousingPolicy</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>auspol</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Greens" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Greens</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/LaborPolicy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborPolicy</span></a></p>
