Wikipedia is giving away its volunteers' hard work and research efforts to train AI. It is an effort to fend off bot scrapers and reduce the strain on its servers — but to me it seems like that's not what most Creative Commons proponents have in mind when they sign on to help Wikipedia.

#Germany, supported by the #EU_Commission's #DG_SANTE & several other #EU member-states, threatens to block the crucial #PandemicAgreement. Why? For Germany & its cronies, it's #BigPharma #IntellectualProperty über alles, even if this threatens the health of billions of people, even if it means violating international trade treaties.

Ars Technica: “Literally just a copy”—hit iOS game accused of unauthorized HTML5 code theft. “Here at Ars, we’ve written frequently about the video game industry’s ongoing problem with blatant game cloning and the shifting legal and ethical landscape around the issue. But we’ve rarely seen a case of alleged game theft as blatant as the one surrounding recent iOS App Store hit My Baby or […]

The opinion by Circuit Judge Patricia A. Millett lays down the first precedential marker regarding how #copyright #law treats works created by #AI. While it sided w/the US Copyright Office’s operating position by finding #human authorship is required for registration, it could create or reinforce perceptions in creative industries that AI’s contributions to a work represent unprotectable creative choices that can be freely copied.

#Human authorship is required for #copyright protection, a DC Circuit panel ruled in a landmark opinion that represents a setback for a push to award #IntellectualProperty protections to #AI creations.
Computer scientist Stephen Thaler argued a copyright should be registered to his AI program for 2D art titled “A Recent Entrance to Paradise.”But copyright protects human creation, & Thaler waived his alt argument that he created the work through creating the…program…

I hope countries around the world feel emboldened to repeal all the intellectual property laws that they adopted in hopes of trading with the US. None of it matters any more. It should be apparent now that US tariffs are getting applied RANDOMLY, to countries EVEN WHEN THEY COMPLY WITH ALL TRADE DEALS. I hope they do themselves a favor and free their societies from the shackles of US economic imperialism and innovate in a way that US companies cannot.

Yes: respond to #USA breach of trade deals (imposition of import tarriffs), by revoking #Monopoly #Patent and #Copyright for #USA corporations, to the benefit of one's own country.

#IntellectualTheft (monopolies on culture) keeps medicine from the poor, keeps education from the needy, keeps science from those who will benefit. Now the trade deals are violated, no need to continue protecting USA #Corporation #rentier profits.

This is a great idea, I would love to see #Australia do this also.

Ironically, this article arguing for the social benefits of free use of information, is not on the open web (it's locked behind a login-wall).

@pluralistic's speech addressed "the unique opportunities for disenshittification created by Trump's rapid unscheduled midair disassembly of the international free trade system. […] The rest of the world has an unprecedented opportunity to retaliate against American bullying by getting rid of these laws and producing the tools, devices and services that can protect every tech user (including Americans) from being ripped off by US Big Tech companies.

TIL: Whatever #ebooks or documents you put on a #Kindle, they're being indexed & uploaded automatically to the #Amazon server if the device has an internet connection. Just found out with an unpublished #manuscript that someone wanted to read on their Kindle and it ended up on the Amazon server, although it was put onto the Kindle manually via cable. Whatever you do with Amazon devices, you're adding everything to Amazon's data collection. #Enshittification #AuthorRights #IntellectualProperty

@davidgewirtz Please keep in mind that you're adding all titles to Amazon's data collection. Whatever you upload to the #Amazon cloud AND also what you put on your Kindle is being indexed & uploaded to the server automatically. Just had that with an unpublished #manuscript that someone wanted to read on their Amazon device and it ended up on their server, although it was uploaded manually via cable to the device.
