Julius Zukowski-Krebs<p>And while literature tried to fill this void with realist narratives of the new bourgeois world, there was always a part that resisted understanding. Ignoramus et ignorabimus. It was that, that came to haunt. The elusive, the dark excess of the times, the underbelly of the new world. That which caused pain and terror, fear and despair. And realism alone wasn‘t enough to describe it.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/literature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>literature</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/humanities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humanities</span></a></p>
Julius Zukowski-Krebs<p>If we watch closely at the ideological processes and the epistemological changes in the 19th century, we can see that secularization, the creation of bourgeois states and societies and the rise of science as an integral part of those societies, have created a void of understanding the world, that was left by former feudal and religious hegemonic powers.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/literature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>literature</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/humanities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humanities</span></a></p>
Julius Zukowski-Krebs<p>And it is precisely because realism and uncanny literature cannot be thought of as separate occurrences. Let me explain. In my research, I often found that not only were realistic elements an integral part of the narratives, but that more often than not most writers of the uncanny supernatural were themselves celebrated realists of their time. And this is more than mere coincidence.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/literature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>literature</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/humanities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humanities</span></a></p>
Julius Zukowski-Krebs<p>Why I love Maupassant so much, is because he‘s a prime example of how the bourgeois literature encompassed much more of the affective milieu of his time than many theoreticians want to make us believe. First and foremost, of course, Guy de Maupassant was a realist writer. Of this, there is no doubt. But at the same time, he is imho one of the best horror authors of the 19th century in France. </p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon@a.gup.pe</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@Books" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>Books</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fedigroups.social/@bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon@fedigroups.social</span></a></span></p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/literature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>literature</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/humanities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humanities</span></a></p>
