DoomsdaysCWWhen I first moved to <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/PortlandME" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#PortlandME</a> (back in the late 1990s), it was $750 a month for a three-bedroom apartment in a triple decker building which included a front room (parlor), living room (old dining room), a kitchen, a backroom (pantry), a porch, and basement storage! Now the same unit (assuming one can find one to rent, since many are now condos) would be $4,000 a month! The public discussion that followed the fierce riot that unfolded and the threats made by members of the greek government to crush the anarchist movement in the neighbourhood, was about the events of that night, but purposely avoided addressing the reasons that led to that.Exarcheia has always been a place under siege and attack. Et la gentille Mairie <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/EELV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#EELV</a> a aussi soutenu la pérennisation d'un "tiers lieu culturel inclusif" sur cette même friche. Le genre de tiers lieu inclusif porté par des petits queerous blancs qui promettent d'en faire "un lieu safe", qui gentrifie bien comme il faut et qui l'assume (dans leur "manifeste" ils écrivent : Certain·e·s pourraient nous reprocher de jouer le jeu de la gentrification. C’est effectivement un phénomène inhérent à l’urbanisation, […] Nous avons conscience que nos lieux génèrent parfois de l’entre-soi. DoomsdaysCWSo, I've gotten to know some of the unhoused folks in <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/PortlandME" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#PortlandME</a>. I listen to their stories when I'm protesting, and try to have a little something to hand out to them (money, warm gloves, healthy snack packs). It breaks my heart to see so many in need when there are empty spaces and even boarded up buildings downtown, and yet ritzy boutique shops everywhere! Someone can afford the high rents -- but it's not the people! I remember when one could rent an affordable studio apartment over a retail space. Not anymore! I couldn't afford to live there, and pretty much most of my friends have been pushed out because of gentrification. And now there is urban decay because of the empty spaces. Ms. Que BanhVancouver is consistently ranked as one of the best cities to live in. Multiculturalism and inclusivity are some of the most defining features of the city. Yet recently there has been a strong push for rejuvenating the historic neighbourhoods of the city. One of the most visible neighbourhoods to undergo such rejuvenation is Chinatown. It was initially developed along Carrall and Pender Street by the Chinese labourers who first settled in the 1880’s. Once a site of small businesses owned by Chinese families, Chinatown was considered to be one of the poorest areas of Vancouver for many years.However now Chinatown is being developed into an up-and-coming neighbourhood of the city. Newly opened fashion stores, trendy cafes and rising condos are a visible sign of Chinatown's gentrification. Gentrification is often associated with urban development that provides high-quality housing, increased employment and business opportunities. But besides these positive outcomes, gentrification also brings significant increases in rent and the unequal distribution of developmental benefits to the middle class.
