#framework13

now that I've had my Framework 13 for a couple days, I have to say that trackpad gestures in GNOME are every bit as nice to use as I imagined they'd be

I did of course make use of them back with my Pinebook Pro, but the PBP's trackpad doesn't hold up against the Framework 13's at all. the latter's is definitely the nicest trackpad I've used on a laptop

(the bar _is_ pretty low as far as what I've actually used myself, but, still)

The #UCL buildings in #Stratford are only like a year or two old, but the outlets in the teaching rooms are under awkwardly-placed floor plates. There are tables with all sorts of good outlets in the group study areas and even in the rectory (although those have not survived long), but nothing like that where I tend to have back-to-back seminars.

My #framework13 is one of the intel boards, so it drinks power hungrily even in power save mode, and I can't really afford to go AMD right now because I'd have to buy all new RAM as well. And recently the insulation on the USB-C cable that came with it frayed at both ends, forcing me to find a good replacement.

And so while I was shopping for good PD cables, I ended up buying one of these: anker.com/uk/products/a2343-10

It was...not cheap (even with the silly built-in "discount offer" they use to keep their list price artificially high), and I probably could have saved space and money by getting the 67W version. But I spent ages watching EE nerds testing and measuring multiple GaN power bricks and they all found faults with it (such as power factor) that were fixed in the 100W version (presumably because there's slightly more room for control electronics). Compared to the field that includes competing manufacturers, it seems to be a really excellent all-rounder.

And frankly, I look forward to not having a #TypeG plug sitting with its prongs out in my bag any more. The folding plug tines is enough of a quality of life feature to win me over, and even the "larger" 100W model is about the size of the default one-port 65W charger that came with the laptop.

Updated my #framework13 to Ubuntu 24.10. So far, so good. The usual "me no want Snap Firefox gordammit" dance and a few snags around 3rd party package sources, but that's it.

I'm still thinking about switching to Fedora, as it seems to be even better supported by #Framework, but I have much more experience with the Debian/Ubuntu ecosystem...

Oh, and I finally ordered the new screen as I want the higher resolution and also mine is subtly damaged, not sure what or when that happened.

Update 2: Laptop repaired!

The parts arrived yesterday afternoon it took just 30 minutes to swap everything into the new bottom cover & replace the input cover.

I will miss the looks from people when they saw me with a half removed keyboard. The only way I could power on was by removing and reconnecting the keyboard, very eccentric and it suited me.

I'm thrilled to have been able to repair my laptop rather than replace it, thanks again @frameworkcomputer !
